RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - With a plasma TV, a DVD player, $172,000 in cash, gym equipment, two refrigerators and a couple of guns, Genilson Lino da Silva had everything he needed for a luxurious life -- in his Brazilian prison cell.

It came to an end on Monday when his cell, which also contained a king-sized bed, was raided in a police operation against drug traffickers in the northern city of Salvador.

"He was alone in all that comfort. It wasn't very big but the other cells had several prisoners in them," a spokesman for Bahian state authorities said on Tuesday.

Officials said Da Silva, also known by his nickname "Leg," was serving time as the biggest drug trafficker in Bahia state. He was reported as saying the money in his cell was from old robberies and gambling in prison.

"We will investigate if the leaders of the prison were conniving in this," Paulo Gomes, a state prosecutor, told reporters.

He said he was not surprised that kidnappings, murders, and drug trafficking were being directed from inside the jail. "The surprise was finding 280,000 reais ($172,000) inside a cell."

Peace to All creatures great and small............................................

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

What Im trying to figure out is , who made this raid? Was it the prison gaurds or an outsider related to the prison system in Brazil. To say that no one that ran the prison knew this was going on would mean either 1) they were paid very well to "not Know" or 2) the prisons there are really as bad as we see on the news here and are pretty much run by the prisoners and the gaurds only have access to certain areas of the prison.

He was paying someone in there to look the other way.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Ya think a few guards might have been on the take?

I dunno about anyone else - but I would think that a cell turn down would yield in the very least a few thoughts like:

hmmmmm - his cell sure could afford a few more inmates, or

boy thats a big bed, or

where is that satellite signal to the plasma tv coming from, or

he's drinking a cold beer in an air conditioned cell, the guardshack doesn't even have air conditioning . . . .

I'm pretty sure that's the case.

Well I have seen some pretty bad things about the prisons in Brazil, and if they were anything like the prisons in El Salvador then it could have be the other way around, the poor gaurds in those prisons are run by the inmates.

So I started wondering how hard up you'd have to be to want a job in a prison in El Salvador, when it occurred to me that they may use it (allowing the prison to be run by inmates) to supplement their income. I dunno. I haven't seen any documentaries on it or anything. Just a thought.
