how do you prove you have never been married?

I know in Canada they have such a thing as a record search to prove there were no marriages registered. Not sure if it's a requirement for specific countries, though. Are asking about the petitioner or the beneficiary?

Depending on the Consulate, the foreign fiance(e) may be required to bring some form of single certificate to the interview. This is never required in a country where it wouldn't be available but almost always from countries where it would be.

USA is not a country where such a document is available as marriage is a State, not Federal record.

In Colombia every time you ask for a copy of your birth certificate, it'll have marginal notes showing each of your marriages with dates and all. Since there are also many people who only go by the Catholic church records, the embassy asks for baptismal certificates as well since these will show marginal notes as well showing any marriages that have been done in the Catholic church.

Here in the Philippines we have this thing called CENOMAR ( Certificate of No Marriage ) that you can get from the government . Some US Consulates here in Phil ask that paper to the beneficiary.

for a K1 visa.

In Jamaica, you go to the RGD....Register General's office.....same place as birth papers and death certificates.

We need to keep in mind that Civil Law are different in each country. Doesn't matter if it does not sound "logic" it is required by law to prove your civil status with certain document/certificate stating that you are legally free to marry, this is the reason why some U.S. Consulates ask fot this document too.

I understand how this might sound weird, if this does not exist in your country. But as others have said, in some countries, they have NO-Marrige record or certificate, in these countries, even when you have never been married, there is an existing record to prove that.

It's a fraud prevention measure. US Consulates do not have direct access to marriage records of other countries.

I had a divorce certificate for myself, but the question arose regarding "how does my never-married fiancee prove that she has never been married?" I had my fiancee take two witnesses to an attorney, who sent her to a notary -- a real windbag who wrote up a FIVE-page document that could have been condensed into just one line: "Miss ____ has never been married, as attested by Witnesses #1 & #2." It's not clear whether this form had any impact, but in the absence of any official document of "you've never been married" from any given country, you can improvise in this way. The notary's document included the national ID numbers of the witnesses, and copies of their ID cards.

We included this document (and its English translation) in the I-129f package, and it was the longest single document in the package.

And a useless waist. USCIS never requires any proof of no marriage. Some Consulates do and when they do, an actual government document is all they will accept. As mentioned earlier, this only happens in countries where such an official government document is actually available. They are absolutely aware of which contries do and don't have such records available since the USA does not.

I am a US citizen. When I wanted to marry my husband overseas, I needed to fill out a form at the US Embassy and have them endorse it that I was free to marry. My husband (from Iran) had to do the same thing with his Embassy. Then we those docs to the Thailand Magistrates Office where we got married.
