Lacking a hymen doesn't mean the woman isn't a virgin.

Cultureconfused-smiley-17429.gifit is called ignorance, and uneducated, this needs to stop; it is absolutely insane to still base women on virginity. I come from a culture also that believes this #######; it starts with education and be able to take a strong stand against these arctic practices. Shame on humanity. angry-smiley-17026.gif

A woman is like a tea bag- you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.

But when we turn to the Hebrew literature, we do not find such jokes about the donkey. Rather the animal is known for its strength and its loyalty to its master (Genesis 49:14; Numbers 22:30).

well the problem is in our culture and religion......if u can even put those two words together lol at any rate in most Islamic countries word gets past down from man to man of what to look for when u marry if ur women is pure or not.......UNFORTUNATELY.....they lack the knowledge that women can lose it from a hard fall or many other reasons other than having sex and there are some women that do not even have it at birth it has made life very hard and dangerous for women that are pure but have not this little tiny thing to show proof of it.......i have even known of some cases that the grooms family demands a certificate from the doctor stating if the girl is pure or not im not saying this is right........infact it is completely wrong.......many men even in the usa believe this #######........studied it in one of my classes lol its the only reason i know it.........

Saying it's due to a mix of both culture and religion is appropriate, because this isn't limited to Islam. Small town non-Muslim men in India, for example, are just as obsessed with purity. But I never heard of tests and certificates till recently, on the Internet.

sadly it happens more than people realize it does........and if the girl refuses the family thinks that it is because she is hiding something it never crosses their mind that it is an insult to her

Still as things go the annulment is a good thing. Had the man actually liked his wife, or vice versa, does anyone really think he would have let anyone know about his suspicions of her not being a virgin? They are better off divorced. Of course, within their own circle of friends her 'reputation' is now toast, but maybe that'll give her the strength to look outside of this circle and find someone who loves her for who she is and not what she represents on the scale of chastity. One can at least hope for that rather than some 'honor killing' ending. That's simply sick.

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

From a cultural perspective the annulment means the husband can go back and try again as if he had never been married - reputation spotless so free to grab a new beautiful young virgin. A divorce might have reduced his options - probably would as his reputation might have been tarnished - ie the divorce was partly his fault. At least, that's my guess.

I guess annulments erase memories? Seriously, I can't see the difference at all, but then again I'm not particularly concerned with "reputations".

Why do people bother in the U.S.? There must be financial benefits to an annulment? Do people who have had a marriage annuled get to check the box for "never been married" as opposed to "divorced"?

I believe so, yes. An annulment is basically saying the marriage never happened, it's declaring it void.
