I have pinto beans growing under my red maple from the old bird seed I threw out 2 years ago. Now what the heck am I gonna do with those pinto bean plants? I really dont want them.

I never grew okra. I doubt if I have room or dirt for any more plants / veggies.

Don't cry. You can deliver it and while you are here you can play with the birds.

Awww, that's great! Don't kill them, just leave them. Beans come in handy in tight spots :) It's like the cattails I have in teh backyard. i tried telling Ammar we could eat those roots if we were short on food. he just didn't see the coolness in that.

None of my posts have ever been helpful. Be forewarned.

Have fun at the zoo!!! We haven't been to the zoo in ages though my kids are older. The last time was two years ago I think and it was during Christmastime. They dress the whole zoo up in lights and it's so pretty! My favorite thing to see there is the flamingos.

Last night almost made a trip to the ER. Hubby was scared beyond belief. After 3 Aleve and a constant hot pack my left side was still in excruciating pain. I honestly thought I was having an ectopic pregnancy and my tubes were exploding or something but alhumdulilah the pain eventually subsided and I was able to get some sleep but this is like after 2 hours of me in tears from pain and I'm really not THAT big of a baby, ya know? I still feel twinging but nothing like last night. Scarey stuff I tell ya. I know I"m at super high risk for a tubal pregnancy now but hopefully that's not what that was.

Raining outside here today and it's very welcome. I love my girls and I do like watching their softball games but they're on different teams due to being on different leagues (majors vs. minors) this year so it's hard 'cause I only get to watch half of one game and a last half of the other. Hopefully all games will be cancelled tonight so we can have some nice quality time in the house for a change.

Hubby's hitting the pavement again today. We found out that he can use his SS receipt if they ask for his number so he started going door to door looking for work yesterday. Tomorrow he'll look in the city but he wanted to see if he could get something closeby first.

I hope everyone has a nice day today!

I hope you got checked out or will be soon. I had a scare 2 weeks ago that sounds very similar. I did go to the ER where they informed me I was pregnant, thought it was ectopic and wheeled me into surgery. Fortunately, it was a normal pregnancy, unfortunately, I just had surgery for no reason and now 2 weeks later, I'm going through my second miscarriage in the past 6 months. A week later they decided I must have had an intestinal infection instead of the ectopic pregnancy. It makes me wonder if I was treated for the infection instead of the unnecessary surgery if I would still be pregnant.

I would definitely have that kind of pain checked out. I'm sure you will have better doctors than I did.

I just took my husband to the airport today for his first trip back home to Morocco. He'll be gone for 7 weeks so I will probably be here posting to keep myself occupied. The house feels so empty and my daughter and I both just sat on the couch and talked about how much we miss him already. :(

"True freedom and the end of suffering is living in such a way as if you had completely chosen whatever you feel or experience at this moment. This inner alignment with Now is the end of suffering. Is suffering really necessary? Yes and no. If you had not suffered as you have, there would be no depth to you as a human being, no humility, no compassion. You would not be reading this now. Suffering cracks open the shell of ego, and then comes a point when it has served its purpose. Suffering is necessary until you realize it is unnecessary." Eckhart Tolle

Ooooo gardening alert !

Juliana, are your Spider Wart's in bloom yet?

I don't have any spiderwort here. i had some 2 hourses ago. I miss it. My aunt called it snotweed lol. Yesterday I planted the public veggie garden. Ammar came home while I was going it and scared the ####### out of me.

I have spiderwort (although I prefer to call it by its "proper" name because "spiderwort" -- well it just doesn't sound very pretty.) I have varieties in blue, white and 2 different colors of purple. But it already finished blooming down here.

That wasnt very nice. do you have any Pinks?

Yep, but they are past. I have the perennial ones and they stopped blooming probably a month ago. sad.

That wasnt very nice. do you have any Pinks?

what color daylilies do you have?

I have *scads* of daylilies -- lots of Stellas, Aztec golds, old-fashioned roadside oranges, some pink, some mauve, some yellow with green throats, some yellow with rust colored throats, some reds with yellow throats.... I have zillions of them. (I can't take all the credit -- the lady who used to own my house was a big woo with the local hemerocallis society.) Daylilies are one of *the* best perennials for South Texas (or just about anywhere) -- they can take severe heat and drought (and considerable neglect, too)

I wonder if they are the same as what i have ( few of ) ? You should post a pic, even if they are done blooming. I can trade spider wart for more pinks. The cannis are finally up.

That's what I have. Dianthus cheddar firewitch.

it has been such a slow start this year for the garden with all the cold spells. picked my first eggplant today.

I can only grow dianthus as an annual during the cooler months -- it won't last in the heat down here. But my cannas LOVE it -- they're blooming away. I'm already harvesting oodles of eggplant, cauliflower, and lots of tomaters. But tragically my squash fell victim to a horrible invasion of Mexican bean beetles -- alas it still has not recovered.

I had posted some flower pics recently in Olivia's thread in OT.... I think it was called "What's blooming in your area" or something like that....

I am so excited about the okra I planted. i followed the directions carefully of boiling water, soaking, and whatnot.. but I have to admit I chickened out on the boiling water. I did pour some over them, and then I got really scared and immediately reduced it to barely covering the seeds. I mean boiling water! I am sure it would be fine as the person who told me does it herself, but it's so scary to me. Okra has beautiful flowers.

I've been watching for okra plants at the garden stores -- but there's none to be seen. It does very well down here (and yes the flowers are pretty !) Never tried it from seed....

Mine will die out if I forget to water it. I'd like to try okra from seed -- I need to do a little googling to see if it's not too late in the season for us....

I know! What could be better? :) Gardening, brings the world together :) Actually, back when I first went to Ammar's village, and he dropped me off at his house with the least-English-speaking members of his family (sisters), that is what we "talked" about. We walked around the garden looking a the plants and sharing names, uses, etc.

I love the "cousin" secretsia a whole lot. Have you seen the variegated variety? It is great in heat. When I had spiderwort (or tradescantia or snotweed, depending on who you are and what you wish to call it lol), I had 2 named varieties... but my favorite which i never had was "Lime Green" which has, as named, the bright green foliage.

I have 2 daylilies at the moment, as you named it regular hemerocalis spp. (roadside) and then I have the double form of that from my grandmother.

I have to keep my dianthus where it gets some shade in the summer to shade it from the heat.

What kind of eggplant do you have? is your cauliflower self-blanching? I am going to try self-blanching this season. I'm setting up some raised beds like i said... and doing square-foot gardening. My eggplants are ichiban (long, purple asian) and green goddess (same, but green). I've never tried green eggplant. i am curious about yellow. I keep seeing it in the Baker Creek catalog and wanting it. Have you tried planting something offensive (to beetles) around your squash? like garlic, onion, or something like tomatoes/potatoes? Sometimes that works better than spray. Also try marigold or nasturtium (too hot for nasturtium now of course).

I'll have to go look for your garden pics when I get to work.

As far as okra... I haev seen it for sale at walmart recently, and I have seeds if you're interested. You shouldn't have lost your time on Okra yet, as no one really plants it out until nights are above 75 anyway.... and it loves the heat. the kind i have are from Africa. A friend brought them back and shared her first generation with me.

That's exactly what I would do in Palestine -- point to stuff and say the name I know. A couple of times I didn't recognize something and whoever I asked didn't know either, but they would always say "let's find some old person and ask them -- they will know." :P

I don't think I'm familiar with secretsia -- will have to look it up.

OMG snotweed -- that's worse than spiderwort !!! :dead:

I have some double orange daylilies, too -- some are prone to mutate (or cross pollinate) on their own. They spread prolifically, so if you have one now, don't worry you'll have lots more in a year or two.

I have Japanese eggplant -- they're fairly small, long and narrow (sounds like what you describe as Ichiban.) My squash is next to the onions and the tomatoes -- didn't seem to phase the beetles. My method of control was to flick them into a cup of soapy water, and destroy their eggs underneath the leaves. They're gone now, but the squash has not sprung back.

I was just googling about okra -- you're right, it's not too late. I did check Wal-Mart and Home Depot and Lowe's and all the usual garden spots, but no one had any plants out -- maybe they don't think A HUNDRED DEGREES TODAY was hot enough  You're very kind to offer up your seeds -- you know okra is native to Africa... so you've got seeds from the motherland. Let me see if I can find some seeds around here tomorrow, or I may have to take you up on that offer !

Oooo Mahmoud has just arrived bearing gifts of falafel AND shwerma !!!!!!!
