Being a Florida coastal resident, and a former Texas resident, I was just researching and thinking about the fact that Hurricane Season has begun and I hope to God that there is not another disaster like Hurricane Katrina in which our Republican government was OH SO PREPARED and helpful with....and I came across this recent video clip.

The Bush-McCain (McSame) Katrina Plan

Vote down additional aid for Katrina victims

Vote down the First Responder program

Vote to block an investigation about the total failure of the U.S. government in the Katrina situation..

Where were Bush and McCain the day Katrina hit? At an AFB in Arizona...eating cake....

I'm not saying any administration would handle a disaster of this type perfectly...but for the sake of the people I KNOW Barack Obama and the Democrats would do a million times better.

Look at this clip..

Katrina's Truth

posted September 6, 2005

I believe that in the “emotion” of New Orleans, certain facts have been ignored, either selectively, or deliberatively. “Dog-bites-man” is not a story, “man-bites-dog” is a story.

The media has failed to highlight the fact that almost 2,000 lives have been saved by the federal Coast Guard, that 66% of the police force of New Orleans failed to report for work on Tuesday, that police officers were taped by NBC looting a Wal-Mart etc., etc., and that the governor of Louisiana was DERELICT in exercising her duty.

The affected area is greater than the area of the UK. The problem is GREATER than New Orleans, - however New Orleans is THE news story. The President of the United States declared a STATE of EMERGENCY, BEFORE the hurricane hit the Gulf Coast.

The federal government is PROHIBITED, - by The Constitution, - from sending federal troops into a state, (i.e., INVADING a state), WITHOUT a written request from the governor of that state.

The governor of the state of Louisiana did not even deploy the National Guard Troops of the state of Louisiana until Tuesday.

As a result of the declaration by the President, BEFORE the hurricane hit, a FEDERAL entity, FEMA went into action.

The first action of FEMA was to REMOVE assets, (water, MREs, blankets, cots etc.,) from the projected path of the hurricane.

These “assets” then had to be brought back into the affected area, HOWEVER, roads, bridges, rail etc., were incapacitated.

The federal government immediately deployed hospital ships to the Gulf Coast.

Canada IMMEDIATELY dispatched a hospital ship, and other support ships, to the Gulf Coast, and certain European countries immediately shipped gasoline to the East Coast.

Once the governor of Louisiana, requested FEDERAL support, FEDERAL troops were dispatched. She should have declared Martial Law on Sunday, HOWEVER she prevaricated, AND her prevarication meant that federal troops could NOT be deployed under the provisions of the CONSTITUTION of the UNITED STATES.

Criticisms of the federal government are totally unfair, the governor of Louisiana is technically at fault, if we desire that we behave differently in future then she should promote an amendment of The Constitution that would reduce the rights of the states, - since the request from the governor of the state of Louisiana did not come until Thursday, federal troops could not be deployed to bring order to the city of New Orleans, bear in mind that the police force of New Orleans FAILED to honor their obligation TO SERVE & PROTECT.

We cannot have it both ways, - Individual Rights, Local Rights, States’ Rights versus FEDERAL control. As a country we DECIDED in 1782, (or whenever!), that the rights of the individual are supreme and that federal government shall NOT interfere.

That’s why we will never have a fast-rail system in the U.S. like the TGV in Europe and bullet-train in Japan; that’s why we have not built a petroleum refinery in the U.S. in almost 30 years, - NOT IN MY BACKYARD.

That’s why we do not have a comprehensive national energy policy and why every state has its own unique gasoline formulation, even though global winds blow pollution for one state to another state, etc.

It is grossly unfair to blame the federal government for the failure of the mayor and police of New Orleans to meet their obligations and to blame the federal government for the absolute incompetence of the governor of the state, and for the idiosyncrasies of the Constitution that we all prize so highly.

The MINOR aspects of this MAJOR problem, such as the fact that certain black activists are claiming that it is RACIST to classify the people leaving New Orleans as REFUGEES, is blatant bull.

The people being relocated to Houston ARE refugees, i.e., they are, IN FACT, seeking refuge. The other, - totally untenable, - allegation that the gederal government was slow to react is because there is NO OIL in LOUISIANA, stretches credulity to the maximum. Let’s cut out the politicized bull and deal with the greatest humanitarian disaster that our country has ever faced.

That's an old article from 2005..doesn't take away from the fact that beyond this date..John McCain says one thing and did another. 5 days after Katrina..Bush said NOTHING...and when he did..wanted to change the subject back to the war in Iraq..the war on Terror..while ignoring the war on the aftermath of a hurricane in his own country..

A bunch of constitutional mumbo jumbo doesnt change what happened, and I'm not making it a race issue I see it as an economic issue. If it would have happened in South Texas it would have been Latinos affected instead of African Americans, and plenty of white people were affected as well.

I don't talk about it much, but I was there..I flew in with my fellow airline employees on rescue missions to get people out..I saw the "regular people", people who were sick, hadn't had a meal in almost a week, dirty clothes, lost everything, water everywhere, the airport was like a medical ward..I still get tears thinking about it sometimes. I'm not condoning the Governor of Lousiana but the President is the leader of the COUNTRY and a little bit of " You know maybe you should listen to me because I CAN help you"..may have gone a long way, who knows...I just hope I never have to see that again.

I would be EXTREMELY disappointed and Angry if it happened under Obama administration yes I would. I can say that Bush handled 9/11 quite well, I was pleasantly surprised..The Katrina disaster was a complete 180..one would have thought he would have at least appeared to care more.

If Obama was to put an incompetent crony like Michael "one heck of a job" Brown in charge of an agency as important as FEMA, praises such idiot in light of chaos for doing a great job and misuses the men, women and equipment of the National Guard for useless illegal adventures overseas while leaving the citizens of this country stranded like we usually see in third world countries after major natural disasters, then yes, absolutely.

Yeah, that pesky constitution shouldn't get in the way. Bush couldn't send in the troops UNTIL the dem governer of LA asked for them. If you want to b!tch about inaction then there is your target. All I see here is political demogogary from you. Ignore that your beloved dems screwed things up totally and blame Bush for it all. Who cares what you think?

I guess you didnt read I'm not condoning that she didn't act either, but if Bush were a true leader maybe he would have pushed a little harder to offer help instead of sitting on his behind waiting for someone to "ask". There's nothing in the Constitution against that last time I checked. I DID go to college BTW. And 2 pole sitters get nothing done and unfortunately on both parties sides that's what we had. Maybe if you would have been there you would see things a little differently. Talk about political demogogary...you should take a look in the mirror look at your own posts. Maybe YOU don't care what I think but that's what makes people like me different from people like you...I do care what everyone thinks about issues, I enjoy listening to the different sides but I don't get rude and childish about it.

1. I'm a democrat

2. I'm a Louisiana native

3. One sister lost her house, another sister (who was 8 months pregnant) got stuck and was "missing" for weeks, my other sister who lived in NOLA with her 3 children got stuck in New Hampshire for 4 months until it was safe to go back and is today still dealing with the after-effects of Katrina, and my god-mother lost part of her house and also had to transplant for months. That's just part of my family. That doesn't include my many friends and assorted other relatives.

4. I absolutely cannot stand our president and his policies and I sit in anxious anticipation for him to be out of office.

That being said: What happened in NOLA was NOT Bush's fault. No one can ever claim that it was his fault unless they just want to point fingers. He did what he could do. The people of NOLA had ample warning and many chose not to heed this warning because they'd been there before. The breakdown of transportation, police and emergency help, and evacuation shelters is the fault of Ray Nagin (the mayor) and Gregoire (the governor) and FEMA who should have not taken A WEEK to help people in need. Hell, Harry Connick Jr was in NOLA helping before the freaking FEMA trucks got there.

The aftermath and it's disaster has more to do with FEMA's incompetence and the apathetic attitude of the New Orleans mayor (who was safely out of the city when people were dying in their beds in a nursing home in Chalmette and celebrities were helping pull bodies out of the floods) as well as the derelict conditions of the levees and the poor communication. I'll be the first to say that Bush has screwed up a lot in his years as our Commander in Chief, but Katrina cannot be put at his feet.
