I live on the east coast and I'm planning to drive to montreal this summer, would my green card suffice? or should I need to bring my passport as well? thanks everyone..

Hi,

You need to bring your passport as well. If you are not a Canadian citizen, you need to apply for a visa (depending on your nationality).

You will not need a passport until 2009. Proof of citizenship would be fine. However if you have a passport I would use it.. it may cause less hassle.

People are crazy - no passport and no visa needed - people drive to Canada and back everyday - some twice a day. I lived in Michigan and went to Canada for lunch or dinner or buying gas - just the greencard is needed. Have a Molsom for me. Good Luck

A Molson is probably easier to find ;)

I would suggest you bring your passport just in case for re-entering the US. While legally you can re-enter the US with just your green card, I personally have been asked to see both passport and green card when I've returned.

divorced - April 2010 moved back to Ontario May 2010 and surrendered green card

PLEASE DO NOT PRIVATE MESSAGE ME OR EMAIL ME. I HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT CURRENT US IMMIGRATION PROCEDURES!!!!!

Green card holders don't need a passport or visa to enter Canada but I would advise taking the passport anyway.

Many who don't have green cards yet, who are not US Citizens WILL need both a passport and visa even for a weekend depending on country of citizenship but this does not apply to a legal US Permanent resident.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

We're thinking about taking a trip to Canada as well (yes, from Michigan, just a drive over the bridge or through the tunnel, Molson waiting on the other side). Both my wife and daughter have their 2 year greencards, can they use their Chinese passports or do they need to get U.S. passports? Their Chinese passports contain the visa information, that's why I ask.

Thanks,

Keith

They are not eligible for US passports so they couldn't use them anyway. Their Chinese passports are fine as long as they have the greencard. Green card holders (permanent residents in the US) do not require a visa to enter Canada but it is a good idea for them to have their passports as well. Enjoy your visit.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
