Associated Press: Obama clinches Democratic nomination

Barack Obama effectively clinched the Democratic presidential nomination Tuesday, based on an Associated Press tally of convention delegates, becoming the first black candidate ever to lead his party into a fall campaign for the White House.

...

The AP tally was based on public commitments from delegates as well as more than a dozen private commitments. It also included a minimum number of delegates Obama was guaranteed even if he lost the final two primaries in South Dakota and Montana later in the day.

The 46-year-old first term senator will face Sen. John McCain of Arizona in the fall campaign to become the 44th president.

...

Obama's triumph was fashioned on prodigious fundraising, meticulous organizing and his theme of change aimed at an electorate opposed to the Iraq war and worried about the economy—all harnessed to his own innate gifts as a campaigner.

Clinton backer Feinstein says it's time to end

Posted: 02:35 PM ET

From CNN Congressional Producer Ted Barrett

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Major Hillary Clinton supporter Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Tuesday the final primaries mark a “moment of truth” for the New York senator, who should end her campaign.

The California senator also repeated her view that Clinton should be tapped for the vice presidency.

“I think after the campaigns are wrapped up today, it is in fact a moment of truth,” Feinstein told CNN. “I think a decision has to be made about whether keeping this nomination wide open is in the best interest of winning in November. I do not believe that it is, and I’m a very strong supporter of Hillary being placed on ticket as a vice presidential candidate.”

Feinstein, who endorsed Clinton last summer, has resisted calls for her to use her influence to convince the White House hopeful to abandon her presidential bid, although she said last month that the protracted primary contest was making for dangerous friction within the party.

“The reason I say this is because each one of them represents a different constituency. The constituencies are knocking heads at the present time,” said Feinstein.

“There are women all over the country and particularly in my state of California who think she has not been treated fairly. They want her to stand tall. One of the reasons she stayed in the race was to stand tall. She’s done that. The two of them together, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton, cover the constituencies of America and I think represent a working team that is unprecedented in the United States.”

I think the time has come to end the primary, to put the ticket together, to bring people together and to march forward together into the convention.”

Hillary would be more effective if they made her Senate Majority Leader. I'm not buying into the idea that she'd be content with VP status...unless her and Bill are hoping to see Obama knocked off.

Hillary would be fine as VP if Bill wasn't around. Bill's a loose cannon, an angry old man. He won't fit.

And here is Hillary's electability argument going down the drain:

Poll: Obama has edge over McCain

On the same day Barack Obama could clinch the Democratic nomination for president, a new poll out Tuesday shows the Illinois senator holds a slight lead over presumptive Republican nominee John McCain among likely voters nationwide.

The new USA Today/Gallup survey shows the Illinois senator with a 5 point advantage over McCain among likely voters, 49 percent to 44 percent. That margin is just outside the poll's 4 point margin of error, meaning Obama appears to hold a slight advantage over the Arizona senator with five months remaining until voters weigh in at the polls.

The survey shows Hillary Clinton also leads McCain, though with a margin that is just with the poll's sampling error. According to the survey, the New York senator bests McCain by 4 points, 48 percent to 44 percent.

A similar poll conducted by USA Today/Gallup last month showed John McCain beating both candidates — a potential sign the ongoing Democratic presidential race has not hurt the party's chances in November.

And this is for all those that think the decrease in the median income during the last expansion cycle hasn't registered with the voters. The majority of the people feel the pinch.

That was not my claim Dog. My claim was that those who feel the strain of the economic decline are not necessarily going to vote for 'change that they don't understand' in favour of 'the nominee who represents the nearest thing to Reaganomics there is'.

Refusing to use the spellchick!

I have put you on ignore. No really, I have, but you are still ruining my enjoyment of this site. .

Fair enough - again for the record I do hope that the Dems via Barack reclaim the WH. However, I am not so sanguine as to hope that would signal the dawning of a new age of growth and prosperity. The most I am hoping for is an improvement in the health care system and maybe more emphasis placed on developing a sustainable economy and sustainable energy policies. Apart from that, I don't think much will change. Of course, I am quite willing to be wrong.

That would be lot, wouldn't it? I'd really like to see his much praised conciliatory skills at work.

I am not expecting for miracles to happen, but one thing I really like is the scolarship program for troops. That is so well deserved!
