Not to mention industrial scale deforestation. Human activities (specifically intensive agriculture) have been shown to cause desertification of massive areas of land (i.e. the dustbowl in the 1930's). This isn't really any more implausible than that.

Actually there's some reason to believe that its actually greener to live in densely populated urban areas, given that the reduced car ownership in cities like New York.

Coming from LA where we used to live I'm not sure I entirely believe that - given that the huge urban sprawl of that city has essentially created its own local greenhouse effect.

Its interesting that the story keeps being recycled - you'll note in Luckstrikes version there is mention of 9000 people in Environmental science. Gary's version doesn't reference that.
