We're in a lucky situation in that we're having the reception in a not ridiculously expensive city

Plus we kinda feel that a lot of the people coming (about 50%) will have spent about 1500$ getting there (damn august prices)

So we're buying everyone their drinks

We did debate about it for a long time, and most of my irish friends think we're crazy but ... we're looking forward to treating people.

We're having it in an awesome microbrewery with the best red ale. Mmmm yummy

Ooo...a microbrewery! That is a brilliant plan!

Well, at least Nicky's family doesn't drink much. His mum will have a glass of wine or champagne and his uncle is diabetic and his step dad and aunt don't drink really so I don't worry there.

Actually, my aunt and uncle coming up from Florida are confirmed alcoholics...let's just say that when they have a glass of orange juice for breakfast it is really more of a screwdriver...we couldn't afford to keep them toasted!

I don't think that's tacky at all. The friends of the bride & groom should understand that if they can't afford to do an open bar, that's just the way it is. It's a wedding reception, not a booze-fest! That said, an open bar is rather nice as you don't have to worry about shelling out more money. I plan to have an open bar for my wedding, but most/all of the venues I'm looking at have the open bar deal included within the package for the reception.
