Outside of real personal flaws like unethical/criminal dishonesty, alcoholism, infidelity etc. I'm not sure we should be using "image" to drive our voting decisions.

Hmmm, except some pretty great leaders have been alcoholics or adulterers

Of course - but usually after the fact, or they're things that weren't sufficiently brought to light beforehand.

I remember when Boris Yelstin died someone said something along the lines of how Bringing down communism, dismantling the Soviet Union and establishing something vaguely like democracy in a region that never fully replaced Tartar barbarism with European enlightenment is a noteworthy achievement. Doing it while drunk – that takes a certain style.

True - but I bet he wasn't the only person doing it.

In contrast of course - you have folks like Silvio Berlusconi and Vladimir (puppetmaster) Putin

Are they supposed to be alcoholics?

Of course there's also Churchill.

I mean, our current president is tee-total. Where has that got us?

I dunno about alcoholics, but they're definitely crooks.

Bush is tee-total. He says.... I bet he isn't ;)

I agree that VJ's off topic contributors are biased towards Obama, or at least it seems that way. I don't know how representative they are of all of VJ or America, but I do see your point. And I know when the Dem nominee is chosen, it's going to switch to the majority being anti-McCain and those threads will abound.

I have a question if you don't mind me asking. Do you think the divide in the dem party is more significant than some want to admit? Do you know many other HRC supporters, and are they feeling the same way you are, and are you going to vote for Obama if he gets the nomination soon? I am trying to get an opinion on this from someone besides an Obama supporter.

Thanks for an intelligent question!

Most definitely there is a divide. I doubt it can be healed. There are plenty of polls saying many of her supporters will not vote for him.

link 1,

McCain vs. Clinton Clinton +2, McCain vs. Obama Obama +1 - How is it he is going to be the nom yet, he has lost almost every primary since the Wright fiasco? He is not even ahead in a general, yet he is seen as the inevitable nominee.

I will not vote for Obama. I cannot, in good faith, cast my ballot for someone I do not believe in one iota. He is as bad as Bush in my eyes. Considering I've voted Dem for every other election, this will be hard. I may go Independent, I may write in. Who knows?

Correction - Obama + 0.7

Perhaps after the sting goes away of not seeing Hillary on the ticket, many Hilbots will vote with their party and their minds, as once again we are reminded that on the issues Hillary and Barack are very, very close.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Oh it's a really funny one too... in the 70's People's Temple cult leader Jim Jones led his followers into a mass suicide (something like 1000 people) by drinking Koolaid. So the comparison is that Obama is like a cult leader...

Of course you picked the one definition that fit your argument, but there are others, just as valid.

hmm

"Drinking the Kool-Aid"

The idiomatic expression, "drinking the Kool-Aid", was originally a reference to the Merry Pranksters, a group of people associated with novelist Ken Kesey who, in the early 1960s, traveled around the United States and held events called "Acid Tests", where LSD-laced Kool-Aid was passed out to the public (LSD was legal in the U.S. until 1966). Those who drank the "Kool-Aid" passed the "Acid Test". "Drinking the Kool-Aid" in that context meant accepting the LSD drug culture, and the Pranksters' "turned on" point of view. These events were described in Tom Wolfe's 1968 classic, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.[4]

Currently the term is mostly associated with the 1978 cult suicide in Jonestown, Guyana. Jim Jones, the leader of the Peoples Temple, convinced his followers to move to Jonestown. Late in the year, he then ordered his flock to commit suicide by drinking grape-flavored Flavor Aid laced with potassium cyanide. In what is now commonly called the "Jonestown Massacre", a large majority of the 913 people later found dead drank the brew. (The discrepancy between the idiom and the actual occurrence is likely due to Flavor Aid's relative obscurity, compared to the easily recognizable Kool-Aid.) The precise expression can be attested in usage at least as early as 1987[4]. The saying "Don't drink the Kool-Aid" now commonly refers to the Jonestown tragedy, meaning "Don't trust any group you find to be a little on the kooky side," or "Whatever they tell you, don't believe it too strongly."[5] Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly is famous for using the term in this manner. [6]

"Drink the Kool-Aid," is now also corporate-speak for immersing oneself in a cultlike culture. Appearing in the 1980s and later applied to many a dotcom staffer, the persistent expression clearly wasn't just the flavor of the month. The authors of Hard Drive (John Wiley, 1992), a book about Microsoft, quoted one employee observing of his coworkers, "If Bill [Gates] said drink Kool-Aid, they would do it." And The New York Times cited one analyst who said of certain Time Warner executives: "The AOL guys have got to stop drinking the Kool-Aid and get on the team."

Having "drunk the Kool-Aid" also refers to being a strong or fervent believer in a particular philosophy or mission -- wholeheartedly or blindly believing in its virtues.[7][8]

seems to be the are all "cult" related...

Nah, dev, that doesn't fly. Your statements leaves very little wiggle room - they actually leave none at all. So let us examine this, shall we?

On May 1, you said:

I will abide by whatever comes out of Denver. Will you?

Now you say:

I will not vote for Obama. I cannot, in good faith, cast my ballot for someone I do not believe in one iota. He is as bad as Bush in my eyes.

It's one or the other. These statements cannot be reconciled. So, you either weren't truthful then or aren't truthful now. Wiggle all you want. You did a switcheroo and I called you on it.
