He needs the Party to come together, but I think the reference to 'hillbots' is not directed at everyone who has supported Hillary - just the hardcore ones who can't find anything good to say about Obama while finding nothing wrong about Hillary.

PS: Where did any 'Hillbots' say Hillary was fault-free? Do tell!

Perceptions, Dev. That's my impression of what people mean when they use the term 'hillbots', or 'bushbots', 'obamabots, 'mccainbots.' Robin indicated that Obama will need the support of those 'hillbots' in order to win the election and by my definition of what a 'hillbot' is, I'd say 'no' he doesn't. For one, if they haven't warmed up to him by now, they're not going to ever. For whatever reasons they have, they dislike Obama as the Democratic Nominee so much that they're willing to squander this election. The same I'm sure is true for some of Obama's hardcore supporters. Ain't American politics great?

Steve - my dad is not a "hillbot" but is a lifelong Democrat (who voted for Reagan in 84) who supported her candidacy in the primary. He really likes Obama and the way he connects with people, but is unsure if he can deliver the goods. He would probably vote for Obama but he also liked and respected McCain. He has concerns about the direction the country is headed, and so would prefer a Democrat to be the next president, so I'm sure Mccain would need to do a lot to convince him he's headed somewhere different. But my father has an open mind and does not necessarily buy the "McSame argument." He might vote for Obama, but needs to be convince he can deliver the substance of change. My dad is also old enough to remember the McGovern campaign.

The problem with a lot of Hillary's supporters is I suspect they make up the kind of swing-Democrats who may sometimes vote Republican and who have always liked McCain for the same reasons many conservatives hate him. You can repeat "McSame" until you are blue in the face, but I think some people will take more convincing. Only last year McCain was the scourge of the Bush administration.

Not everyone who still needs to be won over can be explained away by "Hillbot", "racist" or "bitter"

Your Dad sounds like a reasonably minded voter and I can respect his dilemma. You know Bill Maher asked Terry McAuliffe what was Bill Clinton's foreign policy experience in '92 and Hillary's campaign chairman came up with the lamest answer...I'll post the video here. The point being is - with President's like Clinton in the past, we didn't really have much of an idea of how well they'd do in different situations, but for crying outloud, Hillary is not a crystal ball to look into either. Even with McCain, there goes with it a level of uncertainty. All 3 candidates have their pluses and minuses. For me, I'm just ecstatic after waiting 8 years to finally have a candidate that I truly support and as voters have historically done in the past, I'm accepting the level of uncertainty about just how effective a president, the candidate I support will be.

It'll really be interesting to see what happens when the Hillbots must shun their master for she will support the devil.

Perhaps a tiny purge from the Party, perhaps?? Who knows and at this point... who cares?

Whether you like it or not Obama needs the Hillbots to win the presidency. How do you propose he do this?

If they're bots, they're either going to follow Hillary in supporting Obama or they'll have to self-destroy. Fortunately, I think that the vast majority of Hillary's supporters are Democrats that supported HRC as their candidate of choice and will, at the end of the day, unite behind the nominee of the party. Hillary will do the right thing - she has a career in the party to protect.

So if HC tells me to vote for Obama, I need to obey?

Did I say that?

Maybe - I don't think continued caricatures of her supporters who might not be "hillbots" really help, though I see them all over the internet and on television.

As I said, the vast majority of Hillary's supporters are Democrats that will unite behind the Democratic nominee. The very noisy radical element in Hillary's following - a small fringe element in my opinion - is something the Dems are going to have to do without. Truth be told, that radical element is not exactly what I'd like to see going out in support of Obama anyway. They're a bit of a turn-off.

So again Dev, what was it exactly, in your own words (without links to articles or wikipedia or other vj threads) that you mean by Obama supporters "drinking koolaid"?

I'm waiting for this answer as well.

Well, I gotta run, to go celebrate hubster's b-day....so I may never know....

Yayy!

For the B-day!!

 yeah...it was great...

and I KNEW I'd never get an answer to my question

c'est la vie....

Anywhoo, my opinion is that the longer Hillary drags this out, the more and more the party gets splintered, handing this election right into the hands of McCain. So if that's what they (Hillary supporters) want, I guess, so be it.

Naaaaa... I just don't think most democrats are THAT darn petty in following a lemming off a cliff. For what its worth... Hillary will probably support Obama quite enthusiastically if she wishes to see any chances of public office in the future.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Mav, I just can't wrap my head around this election. I'm so terribly pessimistic. I guess I'm trying not to get my hopes up so I won't be disappointed when McCain takes the oath in January.

I will be surprised if the Dems don't win in Nov for a couple reasons like after 8 years of one party people usually want to go to the other party, and having an unpopular current Pres. I do think the Dems have damaged some of their chances with this drawn out nomination process. I don't think it's going to be a landslide at all in Nov even if Dems win. It might be close.

I am not sure if anyone considered or wanted to answer something I said in another thread(I think, not sure if here or somewhere else lol). If McCain is so much like Bush, why did the certain right wing supporters of Bush, and evangelicals included, not want to support McCain until they had no choice but to? Why wouldn't they have jumped to endorse him immediately? We can't be fooled into beleiving he is "McSame"...call him "McSimiliarities" if you want to be more realistic, but that sounds dumb. lol And it wouldn't be a surprise since they come from the same party.

McSame is an exaggeration. But we know the name is not going to die, we'll hear McSame til the end.
