Whether you like it or not Obama needs the Hillbots to win the presidency. How do you propose he do this?

I haven't tried to read the entire thread but I can imagine what was said. Here are my thoughts. Obama went to this church for 20 years. He had to have known what was said there. Any honest person would admitt that. He also knew this Catholic priest for 20 years. He even got this priests church a $100,000 earmark. So he also had to know what this guy has been saying. So, IMO Obama quit because his church became a liability. Not because he disagreed with anything they were saying. If he wasn't running for president my bet would be that he would still be there. This is political expediency and nothing more. It also says something about what is going on inside Obama's head. He must think along the same lines or he wouldn't have stayed with this church and had these people as friends for 20 years. You just cant let him say he didn't know.

Look at the controversial folks associated with this church whether religious, political, or otherwise and it's easy to see that Sen. Obama had to know about the radical nature of this church to some degree after 20 years. The fact is that Sen. Obama turned a blind eye in order to achieve the political power he desired. What is hard to determine is how much was business (politically) and how much was pleasure considering how entrenched he was with the church with his marriage and baptism of his daughters.

I've always been taught that people will perceive you (right or wrong) by the company they keep. And for a potential presidential hopeful, his past associations are very, very shady. All he's missing is a pimp, some hoes, and a mistress to have a royal flush...

I don't think all Hilbots are as petty as we'd like to believe. As a matter of fact its most likely a small, focused minority within the overall group. Some have enough of a conscience to vote along the larger scheme of the issues.

How will he do the convincing per se?

With Hillary's support, no doubt.

Sadly if he were to complete that hand he'd have to switch party affiliation to Republican. ;)

I'm sure the "petty" Hilbots are not that big of a group, but I think some of the "pettier" of the Obamabots might want to drop the frat-boy tone of some of their statements with regards to Clinton as a person and candidate. Women usually stop finding it cute once they hit 25.

He needs the Party to come together, but I think the reference to 'hillbots' is not directed at everyone who has supported Hillary - just the hardcore ones who can't find anything good to say about Obama while finding nothing wrong about Hillary.

Perceptions, Dev. That's my impression of what people mean when they use the term 'hillbots', or 'bushbots', 'obamabots, 'mccainbots.' Robin indicated that Obama will need the support of those 'hillbots' in order to win the election and by my definition of what a 'hillbot' is, I'd say 'no' he doesn't. For one, if they haven't warmed up to him by now, they're not going to ever. For whatever reasons they have, they dislike Obama as the Democratic Nominee so much that they're willing to squander this election. The same I'm sure is true for some of Obama's hardcore supporters. Ain't American politics great?

Steve - my dad is not a "hillbot" but is a lifelong Democrat (who voted for Reagan in 84) who supported her candidacy in the primary. He really likes Obama and the way he connects with people, but is unsure if he can deliver the goods. He would probably vote for Obama but he also liked and respected McCain. He has concerns about the direction the country is headed, and so would prefer a Democrat to be the next president, so I'm sure Mccain would need to do a lot to convince him he's headed somewhere different. But my father has an open mind and does not necessarily buy the "McSame argument." He might vote for Obama, but needs to be convince he can deliver the substance of change. My dad is also old enough to remember the McGovern campaign.

The problem with a lot of Hillary's supporters is I suspect they make up the kind of swing-Democrats who may sometimes vote Republican and who have always liked McCain for the same reasons many conservatives hate him. You can repeat "McSame" until you are blue in the face, but I think some people will take more convincing. Only last year McCain was the scourge of the Bush administration.

Not everyone who still needs to be won over can be explained away by "Hillbot", "racist" or "bitter"

If they're bots, they're either going to follow Hillary in supporting Obama or they'll have to self-destroy. Fortunately, I think that the vast majority of Hillary's supporters are Democrats that supported HRC as their candidate of choice and will, at the end of the day, unite behind the nominee of the party. Hillary will do the right thing - she has a career in the party to protect.

Maybe - I don't think continued caricatures of her supporters who might not be "hillbots" really help, though I see them all over the internet and on television.

So if HC tells me to vote for Obama, I need to obey?

You forgot lack of substance and whining and more whiners and bitterness of defeat.
