Hi everybody,

I need an advise by the VJs girls out there, who went through the same process I'll be going through pretty soon, when they requested a new passport to their country Consulate here in USA: is it better to let them add on the new passport also the last name of your american husband, or just let them leave your maiden last name?

Some countries like mine (Italy) you can choose between giving instructions to put your first name & your maiden lastname, or add your US husband married lastname.

Probably it is better to have also the married lastname added on it, especially when we travel outside USA, so the passport name maches with the green card name. But since I'm still undecided what instructions to give to the Italian Consulate, I would like to have different suggestions/opinions or personal exeperience stories by who went already through this process, and especially who comes from a country like mine, where you can have two options as explained above.

Thanks to all of you girls in advance for replying!!! :star:

I'm the USC and just made an appointment to renew my passport this week. I'm going to show a certified copy of our marriage certificate so my renewed passport will have my married name since that's what I use.

If I were you I'd renew your passport in the legal name that you use NOW - especially if it matches your GC. This way everything will match and you won't have to worry about inconsistency and/or about carrying your marriage certificate with you.

I do have a friend who is a USC but was living with here spouse in Portugal for years. She went to the American consulate in Lisboa after she got married and the consulate stamped the back of her passport with her married name since her passport was issued in her maiden name. She never had any problems travelling because the stamp was issued by the consulate.

However, when it's time to renew her passport she will change it to her married name.
