What? Lots of people in the world eat horse. I think it is the same kind of ick factor that people get when they see balut for the first or tenth time. Doesn't mean that it is bad, just our culture has conditioned us to believe it is.

One of the things I thought was interesting about Germany was how willing they were to show you how animals were slaughtered for food on TV.

we can't eat trigger in the usa.

I'd be a little leery of it myself. A lot of those "special needs" horses are older race horses or show horses that have been pumped full of drugs for years to keep them going. And a lot of those drugs say clearly on the label "not for use in horses intended for food". With the way horses are usually purchased by the slaughterhouses (in large lots at a time), they're never going to know exactly what they are getting or what a particular horse's history is. Someone selling horses for slaughter are probably not going to tell them anyway.

Well, I could never do it. I work with them for a living and I couldn't face myself in the mirror if I did that. But I know there are cultures out there that just don't think of the horse the way we do. Same way with cultures who eat dog on a regular basis. I don't like it but I accept it.

After seeing my mother´s dog dine on cat poop at every occasion, I can´t imagine how dog would taste good. But there are people that think catfish taste good and they just taste like fish flavored dirt to me.

I doubt I would eat horse unless it was free. I am not really the biggest fan of red meats though either in general.

This type of thing usually comes about when people who have no business owning a horse feel that they want to fulfil their childhoos fantasy when they have no clue as to the costs and work it takes to own a horse and it's way more than just hay and grain.

Yep, and in time they loose interest, and the poor animal gets neglected. Indeed , this is a throw away society and not limited to mammals or reptiles, for that matter.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I have two horses and have been feeling the pinch of higher grain costs and just general up keep of the animals (the ferrier finally had to give in and raise his fees because of fuel costs), but I can't imagine ever abandoning them, no matter how bad things get :( Whenever I've had to sell or get rid of a horse, I've always made sure they went to people I know and trust and I still get to see them or am in contact with the people they went to live with. I don't think I could sleep if I didn't know what kind of home they went to. My daughter's pony I raised from birth and getting rid of her would be like getting rid of a family member!

I'm not against people eating them (I know we eat things that others find "icky") as long as they're treated humanely and slaughtered in a humane way (if there is such a way). Personally, I could never eat them, but I don't eat a lot of meat anyways.

Mark&Steph make a good point about the drugs that are given to some the older race and show horses. That would be a concern if I was someone that did eat horse meat.

Reading that article makes me want to go out and hug my horses and reassure them that I'll never abandon them ><

vet bills, horseshoeing, stable costs, feed costs, and sometimes even insurance. and that's not even taking into account tack and stuff if you ride the horse :P
