The Sons of Confederate Veterans wants to raise the Confederate flag near the intersection of I-75 and U.S. 92 (just south of I-4). The group is raising money to erect a flag -- 50 feet long and 30 feet high -- that could be seen by passing motorists. Billed in a fund-raising announcement as the "world's largest" Confederate flag, it would be lit at night and make what the group calls a "visually stunning" statement.

...

"The environment of today is quite frequently to forget where we came from," said Douglas Dawson, the SCV's Florida division commander. "And that includes what this country was founded on."

Dawson, 62, of Pensacola, said he knows a giant Confederate flag flying 24 hours a day over two of the Tampa Bay area's busiest roads will cause controversy.

The south lost, get over it people, I live in the south Pensacola Florida, and we have some places here that are very very backwards, they love their rebel flags. I never understood why they still cling to the rebel flag, THEY LOST, THE WAR IS OVER.

Free Expression - if it has meaning to someone, then to each his own, no matter the size of the flag.

It might be divisive to some in Obama's words, but so is the expression "white entitlement".

The rebel flag's modern association with white supremacists makes it a flashpoint for racial confrontation. Many support the viewpoint of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, who holds that it is unreasonable to ask African Americans not to react to someone wearing the rebel flag. To ask black people to respect a flag that was flown by a group whose political priority was their desire to totally subjugate and dehumanize them is unreasonable.

What is the positive contribution of this symbol? Why should the Confederate flag be regarded any differently from the swastika? Those who fly it are proclaiming their support for racist principles that belong in the past. Indeed the Confederate flag did not enjoy renewed popularity until the civil rights era of the 1960s, when it became a symbol of opposition to the movement.

I love how some can rationalize who gets rights and who does'nt.

If you took a look at the area where I-75 overpasses US 92, you would not be surprised. It's Redneckville. The flag is likely to be erected right out of the junkyard East of I-75 and south of US 92. That would be so fitting. ;)

Hmm - if my memory serves me correctly this would be about around E. Hillsborough Ave & Mango. Just west of Seffner (or as its been newly appointed (methner). One block south of that is a street that I wouldnt necessarily think has the best demographic to apreciate such a "historical emblem". I could be wrong on the desired location though. Gosh I am so happy to be mostly out of FL.

that's what it has turned into. originally it was the flag for states that believed more in states rights.

Rights to do what?

Rights to continue the trade of black people as if they were chattel.

In other words, the right to hate.

Yup their gonna fly a flag and then introduce slavery
