Hello everyone... newbie here to the site and I'm glad I ran across it because there seems to be alot of interesting info and helpful people.

I went with my wife to the Social Security office here in Atlanta this morning to change her last name before we have to send off the marriage license for the K1 AOS. The lady informed me that we should have come in at least 14 days before the stamped date on her K1 visa. She told me that the computer wouldn't even allow her to try to change it. She said the we should go get another stamp (as if that's very likely) and she'll be able to do it. What should we do? Go ahead and file for the AOS and just change her name afterwards? Will this cause problems down the road... I've been pretty much on the ball up to this point with the paperwork, but I guess my luck ran out.

Thanks for your help.

We filed for the AOS before here name was changed on her Social Security Card. Since you are married obviously, you file the AOS in her MARRIED NAME. After all since you were married she has changed her name to your last name. Once the AOS is approved and she has a green card, then there will be no problem to change her name on her Social Security Card. My wife got a job when she recieved her work permitt and she went to work with her maiden name. Her name on her checks, at work, and in her employer's records was in her maiden name. As soon as she got her green card she changed her name at the Social Security Office and then went ahead and changed her name at her employer. None of this caused any problems at all. I hope this helps you.

I swear I think SSA is more difficult then Immigration!!! My husband and I had major problems applying for his SSN with his EAD (a brand new EAD)... because his passport from Mexico (alternate ID) was expired!! We had to get his blue slip (shot record) from his high school as proof of ID ??

Jesus holds the key to YOUR future! So why not put ALL your trust and faith in HIM?

The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war rise up against me, yet I will be confident. (Psalm 27: 1, 3)

Same here... Was smooth as silk (but we did it a couple weeks after AoS was filed for). Unfortunately, dealing with the SSA seems to be random, depending on the person and office you talk to. I'd say, try again and hope for the best.

Good luck!
