So after the 7 months of ploughing through paperwork and collating evidence, and then emigrating, and then getting married, it's time for the next round of paperwork!!

WHY do the USCIS ask for an affadavit of support again, when I just presented them with one at the US Embassy a few weeks ago?

And why do they charge $1000 for the privelege??

And why do I need to show my letter of approval when I've got the K1 visa in my passport? How do they think it got there?!?!?!?

And why does this all take so long? Don't they realise that as soon as I can start working and earning I will be paying taxes???

Aaagggghhh!!!

Phew, I feel better now. So frustrating!

I-134 is an affidavit for a non-immigrant visa which is what your K1 was. It's not a legally binding affidavit unlike the I-864 is. I-864 is required for people who wish to adjust and become LPR and have the potential to apply for certain benefits. The two affidavits are for different scenarios, and K1 holders just happen to go through both of those scenarios.

And why do they charge $1000 for the privelege??

The USCIS is not federally funded from tax money. It runs on the money it takes in from filing fees. They are supposedly adding new systems and staff to make the process easier and quicker, so they need to charge big bucks for applying.

And why do I need to show my letter of approval when I've got the K1 visa in my passport? How do they think it got there?!?!?!?

I-485 is used for many different types of visa holders, not just K1. In some of those cases, they need to see the approval letter to prove that the person applying has a visa number made available to them so they can legally adjust their status. They blanket ask for it from everyone, although in your case they already know you were approved. It's not going to hurt to add it in the application.

And why does this all take so long? Don't they realise that as soon as I can start working and earning I will be paying taxes???

The USCIS couldn't give a hoot about when and how and if you pay taxes as they don't get your tax money.

Aaagggghhh!!!

Don't let the process get you down, you just need to be methodical about it and accept that the processes are not always clear and straight forward, but you'll get there in the end.

K-1 Visa Process.

If you can't handle this - how are you going to handle the frustrations at your work; with your car insurance, with car dealerships, with your doctors, with your medical bills, with your lease/mortgages with your credit card companies - etc. etc. etc - My advice turn tail and go back - you are too much of a #####! :jest:
