hi all,

im very confused, in the mail today i got a registration card of selective service system, from what i can gather it's required by law so that i can be drafted in the us military. Who would of signed me up for this? would it of been when i got my state id recently? i came on a k1 and am not married until next month. can someone explain what it is?

USCIS may have done it, or the Social Security Agency.

Regardless of who sent it to you, if you're under 26 you have to sign up.

As you say, it includes you in the pool of people who can be drafted up should congress enact a military draft. More information can be found at http://www.sss.gov

Really I had no idea that as a resident on a visa that you had to register just in case of a draft. I am assuming that young American males are already in the system somehow.

K-1 journey, AOS/EAD and ROC in my timeline

2011 March 31 - Sent off Naturalization pkg overnight to Texas

2011 April 1 - Arrived in Texas at 10:21 am

2011 April 1 - NOA (rec'd via snail mail April 8)

2011 April 7 - Cheque cashed

2011 May 5 - Biometrics (letter rec'd via snail mail April 15)

2011 May 9 - Placed in line for interview scheduling

2011 June 13 - Rec'd yellow letter (no change in status online)

2011 June 23 - Rec'd text that my case has been scheduled for interview

2011 August 1 - Interview (rec'd via snail mail June 27) PASSED

2011 August 3 - Rec'd email that my case has been scheduled for Oath

2011 September 1 - Oath ceremony (rec'd snail mail Aug 5)

2011 September 1 - All done, yeah.

Legal permament residents do not have to sign it.

If you naturalize, you MUST sign it.

Are we talking about the same thing? The OP said they got a Selective Service Registration card, I would assume that means a card the OP has to fill in to be enrolled in Selective Service.

As a K1 holder, the OP does not have to sign up for Selective Service, but once they file for AoS, they have to. There is a section about Selective Service in the I-485 instructions.

The Selective Service website says that "Lawful non-immigrants on visas (e.g., diplomatic and consular personnel and families, foreign students, tourists with unexpired Form I-94, or Border Crossing Document DSP-150)" do not need to sign up for Selective Service, but "Permanent resident aliens" do.

Signing up for Selective Service is a requirement for Citizenship (if it was appropriate to sign up at the age of becoming an LPR). Failure to do so counts as not being in moral good standing, and based on marriage to a USC you need to have had moral good standing for 3 years prior to becoming a citizen (as well as actually being married).

Once you register for Selective Service, you will get a letter that has a perferated paper card in the letter with your Selective Service registration number and the date you signed up. This, along with the letter, is the proof of signing up that you'd supply at your naturalization interview.

Or do you guys think the OP received something else?

It's not just citizens who have to sign up for Selective Service. This Chart illustrates who must register and who doesn't need to.
