Renewing British Passport in US

DH has been in the US just over 2 years, but I swear that neither of us can think of anyone that has known him for both of those years -and- is a professional to countersign his passport renewal app that needs to head to the embassy very soon.

There's 1 friend/coworker of his, but he's out to Hawaii on vacay for 2 weeks starting today.

Is the countersignature mandatory?

Thanks!

Thanks, already read that though, was looking for confirmation about the countersignature on renewal. The poster in there states "I think". No one actually confirmed the statements with an, "I didnt have to have it countersigned."

Just looking for someone who'd already done it. :)

When Kezzie renewed her UK passport we had our lawyer counter sign. We had phoned the helpline to ask about it and were told as long as the person signing knows you in a profesional capacity then the fact the have not known you for 2 years does not matter.
