A crane toppled and collapsed onto a high-rise apartment building on East 91st Street on the Upper East Side on Friday morning, tearing off balconies and leaving a swath of damage, in the second Manhattan crane collapse in two months. One person, the operator of the crane’s cab, was killed and at least one other has been pulled from the wreckage, but that person’s condition was not immediately known, a law enforcement official said.

I imagine a lot of people in the relevant civil works / health & safety departments will be looking for new jobs come monday...

Bwahahaha! In NYC? No way. Working for NYC is the cushiest gig in the world.

Crikey!

At work I look out the window and can see a dozen cranes not only perched on the ground, but on top of buildings as well, and even one about 30-50 feet from a window I look out of sometimes and I DO think, sheesh... I hope these guys know what they are doing. They sure seem too and I know they make a good living. There is no way in hell I'd want their job.

My dad was out here in Feb - he's a health & safety auditor in the UK. He was amazed seeing those workmen clambering around 4-5 stories up on rickety scaffolding. I guess they have less stringent safety laws...

watching everything unfold now... my first reaction was "again"

The news chopper has to re-fuel so they are rushing the metro-traffic chopper over to the scene... yea MSNBC

The guy who operates the crane that I see out the window climbs up to his cab up this eensy weensy ladder which is about 20 stories off the ground....with NO support... aaack! ANd then he climbs down at lunch, back up, and back down again. There is no way I could do that with my fear of ladders and stairs...EEEK! :o

So how do you get to the 2nd floor?

Walking up is mostly fine, it's walking down that does my head in, no matter how many stairs it is.
