With my hubby's new job he has to drive around LA a lot.. Today was his first day by himself and he got lost a few times ...

So we are looking into buying one of those GPS systems... I have been doing some searching and there are so many to choose from  I have no idea which ones are good...

we are looking to spend around 100 bucks......

from my searching I was thinking Tom Tom or Garmin are good ones but then they have different models and stuff ... argh.. so confusing ...lol

Pedroh suggested I look at Buy.com and I have been looking there are bunch for around 100 bucks....

so I was wondering if you guys had any advice on a good one to get....

I upgraded my blackberry to the Curve today because it has GPS and I suck at directions... I am forever lost but I have to pay $10 a month to AT&T to have the actual service or I can just pay $2.99 for the day when I am going to need it for 24 hours.

Do you have to pay a monthly fee for the other GPS systems that aren't attached to a phone?

I suggest Garmin...but only because they're based out of Kansas City and I know someone who works there  I'm not sure but I think Tom Tom is foreign-made...I'm a made-in-the-US kind of guy when it's an option.

I have a Garmin, I like it, I take it every where I go for my job, Since I travel the US it sure comes in handy. I am partal to Garmin and the Maps database it uses is more true.

You may have to open up the wallet a little more. hard to find a $100 GPS, if you do how reliable is it.

The Garmin Nuvi 200 has gone down to $150 on amazon. That's the one I'd go for. Might be worth spending a little more for it.

I guess the question should be which company has the better maps for your area - none of them are foolproof mind (my map database has the 2008 map and it still doesn't find our nearest Starbucks), and you might find that with Garmin at least - the higher end models use the same basic mapset as the entry level ones - the only difference seems to be in levels of coverage (you pay more if you want South American and Europe) and extra features like bluetooth or traffic receivers.

Don't take that as a dig against Garmin it isn't, but map detail is something to look into - we have two and they work great. My wife has driven pretty much all over the country for her job and its a lifesaver for her.
