McCain campaign has money lead over Obama - the long primary has taken its toll...

Carly Fiorina, an adviser to Sen. John McCain’s presidential campaign, said Tuesday that the Arizona Republican has more funds at his disposal than does Democratic front-runner Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

“At the end of the April, John McCain had cash on hand of over $60 million, and Sen. Obama had cash on hand of over $50 million,” Fiorina said on CNN.

...

While McCain is raising far less money than Obama and Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.), he is also not forced to spend as much money, because he has clinched the GOP nomination. Obama has spent over $100 million through the first four months of the year, according to Federal Election Commission reports.

“When you're putting together these huge rallies, these very well-orchestrated events, the amount of ad time that the Obama campaign is buying, that takes a lot of money,” the McCain adviser said.

I have to wonder at Barack's economic policy if this is in fact true. We have been told that the campaign was effectively over for some time - and although I can see the need to spend 'some' money on ensuring the nomination - I can't quite see the need to spend that much under the circumstances.

That begs the question as to the wisdom of spending the money now and not saving more to campaign against McCain.

Yes, and it makes the whole election process very spurious.

None the less, it doesn't change my point.

He is wasting his funding - or the race wasn't over.

I too find it a little odd. Obama outspent Hillary by a wide margin, he has been anointed the winner long ago and he still hasn't slammed the door on her yet. Makes you wonder what the general election will be like.

As long as there are two candidates, then by definition, the race ain't over. It was over only in terms of Hillary's odds which were stacked against her ever more. That she decides to tap into her own personal wealth to keep running against those odds is a decision that Obama isn't responsible for.

Over the last few weeks, however, you may have noticed that Obama is busy campaigning in key battleground states for the fall rather than in the remaining primary states. He's also campaigning against McCain and not against Clinton. Don't tell me you haven't noticed.
