Families who entered the Great Depression without any significant debt tended to make out very well.

Which is why living debt-free is so important. You never know when the next economic calamity will hit. Those who are leveraged to their eyeballs will be in a world of hurt. And those poised to take advantage (i.e. have capital and no/little debt) will make out like bandits.

Banks have different policy on things like hold times. Just like they do on service fees.

If you disagree with their 'policy' - shop around. There are plenty of other banks out there. You don't have to put up with it.

My first jobs after college were in the banking industry. Things have changed A LOT in the last 30 years. It's turned into a bunch of blood-sucking mega corporations with 'specialists' on staff for corporate accounts; huge trust divisions; internal mortgage companies; insurance agencies, etc. There is only locally owned bank left in our town. I'm a big credit union advocate these days - at least in most CU's you can get a real person to answer your question.

We have an account at Bank of America, and they're really starting to piss me off. They've had a $2,000 check on hold for almost a week now. Um, we kind of need that.
