diet alone isn't going to "get you into shape" except possibly a roundish shape. ;) A sensible diet combined with some sort of regular exercise will get you in shape.

I never really use the word "diet". Eat properly, limiting fat, sugar, and salt intake. Exercise as much as possible. Little things help too, like taking the stairs instead of the elevator, taking a walk at lunchtime, etc.

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

I lost over 60 pounds just on dieting alone but I was still kinda squishy and would get winded on stairs. Now that I've added exercise I feel fitter, stairs don't wear me out and my body's a lot tighter.

I put about 15 pounds back on between the wedding, a death in my family, immigration and moving to England and although the scale says I am still heavier than I was on my wedding day, my body is about the same size if not smaller ;) Muscle burns more calories than fat and muscle is denser tissue than fat.

I just finished doing my Tae Bo cardio and my shorts are falling off :blush:

Dieting won't get you fit, you have to exercise. Thin people who never work out can be in worse shape physically than someone not as thin but who works out on a regualr basis.

It all depends on the end result you are looking for. If you are looking to shed fat, then diet (not actually diet but reducing your calorite intake appropriately) is the way to go. If you are looking to shape up certain areas to add muscle, then exercise is the way to go. Of course, I advocate the use of both, but it all depends on your goal and what you can realisticly put into it.

One thing people fail to realize, if you are trying to tone muscles...that won't do you any good until burn off the fat covering the muscles. Muscle simply wil not show through layers of fat. If you want to PM me with your specifics (height, weight, age, goals, etc.) I can give you a plan to help you get started.

I went down this route last summer when I started working with a personal trainer. Of course, I incorporated all three elements (cutting calories, cardio worouts and muscle workouts). But in this process, I have learned a lot about how the body responds and the steps to take to acheive different goals.

BUT I MUST SAY NEVER DIET! Diets do not work, they are only temporary and as soon as your body resumes normal eating habits, you will regain that weight and then some. For immediate fat loss, reducting calories by eating the right foods in moderation is the way to go, then once the fat is lost, then you increase your calorie intake (still eating the right foods) to "maintain" your desired weight.

Having read health books and many health magazines, and based on experience, if you want to be in tip-top shape you have to do both.

If you exercise hard and still take in as many calories as you burn, your body will stay the same weight but change form a little bit.

If you go on a diet and don't exercise, you will usually drop weight but not make big improvements health-wise like you would if you were exercising.

I've always read from the body builders, fitness athletes, etc. that they focus a lot more on nutrition than their workouts (although they always do both).

With all that being said, "Do as I say and not as I do" I'm not chiseled of granite like I was about four or five years ago...a little on the pudgy side these days. :P

Very well said  By diet, I meant eating the right amount of food and the right types of food. Starving yourself is bad! 5-6 small nutritious meals per day is best.

We should have a VJ weight loss thread. Has there ever been one? Maybe something like one where we set a start date and a total weight loss goal for anyone who's interested. 3 months * 10 pounds/person per month * ??? people = ???? pounds. Maybe we could get enough people together to end up losing half a ton.

God knows I've needed a swift kick in the a$$ here recently!

txladycat is correct.

I typed a whole long reply and my comp stalled and I lost it.

I am a certified Personal Trainer and working on Nutrition and weight management cert as well.

What she said is exactly right. Like her I would be more than happy to help you with anything as well.

Its my passion.

(I really hope I dont offend anyone here): BUT did you know that 85% of the US population is considered overweight?

And the sad part is about a 3rd of that are children.
