A larger than life Canadian drug dealer has had his jail term cut - because the beds and chairs are too small for him.

A judge took pity on Michel 'Big Mike' Lapointe, who weighs more than 30 stones (420lbs), and reduced his sentence by six months, reports the Ottawa Citizen.

"His health was deteriorating, his weight was such that there were no objects in prison made for someone like him," his lawyer Clemente Monterosso said. "His bed is a foot smaller than he is. He can't even sit on a chair."

The lawyer said Lapointe may undergo surgery when he leaves prison, and he may also have to change jobs.

"He worked all his life as a chef," Mr Monterosso said. "That may not be the best place to lose weight."

The 37-year-old has been in prison in Quebec for 20 months and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit drug-trafficking, drug-trafficking and gangsterism.

He was sentenced to five years in prison, minus time served, and a bonus six months were shaved off for his painful adaptation to life in a prison not made for the big and tall.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

Mental note....if I want to commit crimes gain a ton of weight first.

'Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways - Chardonnay in one hand - chocolate in the other - body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming 'WOO HOO, What a Ride'

UMMM i was under the impression that one would lose weight when entering prison, as the food and other conditions would cause someone to become smaller, not larger...way to go Canada...maybe i should come there if i plan on commiting any crimes, as i could stand to lose a few pounds....LMAO

Try a mexican prison, I don't think they will release you just because you have a few extra lbs.

You know, we could market this as a new weight loss treatment. Anyone want to join me as a business quest?

I used to work in a kitchen of a prison back in Canada... they eat pretty good.. nothing gourmet or anything like that... but they do get more then bread and water...

the one thing that ticked me off is all the special diets.. I can understand if someone is allergic to something but we catered to all the religious diets etc..... they are in prison they shouldn't get special treatment...

You've said that before. I guess I don't get it. Christians and Canadian-born get "special treatment" by receiving food made within the parameters of their food culture. You in effect want to punish the others for being different from the norm. Just because Christians don't have dietary restrictions doesn't mean Jews, Muslims, etc. should have to abandon theirs because they're different.

Of course, having said that, I have to add that I think special religious diets are ridiculous because religion is ridiculous, although I do believe everyone has the right to believe in their fictional-man-in-the-sky of choice. :)

Actually, the food in prison here in the U.S. at least is often mainly starches and bad carbs and stuff. It will keep you alive but it will make you fat too. People on Death Row often gain quite a bit of weight between sentencing and execution, I noticed.

I would say that's probably also to do with being locked up all day long

eh i don't know... i think not allowing someone to keep halal/kosher etc. would infringe upon freedom of religion. maybe for a murderer i wouldn't care, but for non-violent offenders (people in for drug possession etc.) i don't see the problem.

yeah but I worked in a maximum security prison... the majority of the guys in there were convicted of murders and rapes etc...

thing is for the most part.. we never got the special meats and stuff in.. not sure why.. so our head cook would take the regular meat and just shape it different ...
