It probably wouldn't make a significant difference, but I noticed some women brought a carry-on along with a large purse. I'm not sure what the size limits were on the purses but some were almost as large as their carry-on.

I would bet women's propensity for shopping has something to do with too much stuff for their luggage. Just kidding but isn't it true?

hi just wanna know if anyone here know anythin abt the fine for excess baggage and like how they're computed?

:help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help: :help:

I was in the same situation before I left. I can't remember how many times I packed and unpacked my stuff just to make it within the allowable weight . I almost damage the weighing scale  . I just decided on bringing the things I really need for the next 6 months & the rest I just sent thru Post Office. Of course, I arrived ahead of my package but at least I didn't pay for any excess luggage :) . Good luck in your packing (don't forget the brown packet  ). Have a safe trip.

well this is real sore subject right now for us, I booked a flight for Joy and The itinerary includes Philippine Airlines from Cebu to Nagoya(Tokyo) then American Airlines to Chicago. I look on Philippine airlines website and the weight limit is 20 Kilos total allowed same as domestic and it is $14 a kilo over 20 kg. I immediately called Philippine airlines nd they confirmed this. Utterly freakin ridiculous her Luggage weighs 5 kilos alone.

This lowest weight limit for international travel in the industry let alone $14 a kilo.. #######.

It sucks as the ticket is non refundable or I would change it in a heartbeat.

Fedex quoted $200 for 20 kilo box from cebu to Chicago (2 days via air)

Manila Forwarder quoted $170 for jumbo balikbayan box (24x18x24) no weight limit. Cebu to Chicago (4 to 6 weeks via ship)

So Joy is going crazy trying to limit her stuff.

sorry to hear that..

well it's really confusing for us right now cos of course we're girls and we got lotsa stuff..

and we love them so much.. and it's gonna be so hard for us to decide which is in and which is out..

anyways.. just wanna ask, joy is flyin to chicago?? when?? im flyin from manila but to chicago too..

Her flight is scheduled for June 12. Flying out of Cebu City 1 stop 3 hours in Tokyo then on to Chicago.

I also flew via PAL to San Francisco and I had two luggages ( large and medium) weighing no more than 32 kilos each. I had two carry ons. . a shoulder bag ( the size of which was big enough for my brown envelope to be placed inside) and a small box carrying my wedding stuff and xray.

At first I didn't want to leave many things but I also didn't want to pay so I brought my stuff according to their importance and the rest I just left behind because Joe told me I could get them here. I left a lot of "important" things but I had to because I didn't want hassles in the airports because of excess weights etc. . the long flight is already straneous. Because my luggages were not over the allowed weight, my check in was very easy. To add, if the POE is not the final destination , domestic flights here allow only 20kilos per passenger. Since Joe and I had to flew to Florida from San Fran, he brought two bags and I transferred some of my stuff to his bags so I still didn't exceed the 20kilo limit for the domestic flight.

Bottomline is. . . no matter how important the things are that you want to bring, you have to leave things behind for your comfort during the check in process and of course , you will save money. Im sure life goes on when you will be here even if you leave some important stuff in the Philippines :)

So sort out your stuff and bring only the "most" important, unless you want to pay :)

Just a thought.

hi.

i know! but, in my case, i'm bringing stuff which i can't live without and which won't be used by my family and will just rot in my room.

case in point, my cd collection. i will fight tooth and nail to keep it, since i'm a music person more than a tv person. then, my book collection. i have more than 500 but i'm resigned to just bring 20! hu hu hu. then my shoes - alas, i will only bring 5 pairs... much to the delight of my 15-year old niece!

then, there are gifts which are just too precious to leave behind (precious because they were given by really special people and i'd want to keep them (including a painting- question: how in the world will i pack that?)

so, essentially, i will just bring a handful of clothes. thank god it'll be summer when i get to the us, so it'll be some time yet before i will ask/beg/plead my hubby to take me shopping for warmer clothes.

dang, i never realized migrating can be this heart-breaking!

When I travel I carry a backpack in addition to my carryon bag. They have never weighed either one of those, I guess because I never looked like I was straining. I had no problems at all with either of those items, so for me, that would make 4 things to store stuff in. and I will make sure that Riza also has the same number of luggage, to try to retrieve as much of her stuff as ossible on the plane. I may have to have her ship anything that she needs that does not fit.

been reading some of the replies here and they are all insightful and helpful to us who are having this dilemma. just want to share this. i also have my favorite cds...i plan to buy an ipod where i will transfer all my favorite songs...one kilo down. my albums of memories...i plan to scan them and save the pics on my laptop. hopefully they will all fit in...3 kilos down. i have learned to let go of attachment to material things. am sure when we get to the US, and start living there, am sure we will all start accumulating things again. so i don't plan on bringing stuff here that i won't really need in the US. well these are just my thoughts....
