We came back from Manila at peak season on Northwest on our last trip. Marlene did a lot of shopping. Northwest allows 70 lbs per bag between the Philippines and the U.S. At that time, overweight bag charge was $600 for each overweight bag and $240 for each excess bag. We had 5 bags and 2 of them were overweight. We purchased a box from Northwest ($10) and put items from the overweight bags into the box. We then had 6 bags total so we had to pay $480 for the 2 excess bags.

hey there,

i know both EVA & Cathay allow 40kg/70lbs per bag.you can check 2 bags. i always travel with more than 100lbs of stuff. I dont know about the other airlines but American allows you to check your bags based on your international carriers weight limit. Some times you need to remind them of this if you get a newbie at the counter. They also wave the new bag fee for international travelers. I called AA to confirn all this for my trip in july. if you have more than 140lbs of stuff perhaps you should consider leaving the bricks behind. As far as access weight fees for traveling within the Phils you just have to eat those fees. Good Luck sorting thru your stuff.

Do not judge a man by his mistakes, judge him by what he learns from those mistakes.

well this is real sore subject right now for us, I booked a flight for Joy and The itinerary includes Philippine Airlines from Cebu to Nagoya(Tokyo) then American Airlines to Chicago. I look on Philippine airlines website and the weight limit is 20 Kilos total allowed same as domestic and it is $14 a kilo over 20 kg. I immediately called Philippine airlines nd they confirmed this. Utterly freakin ridiculous her Luggage weighs 5 kilos alone.

This lowest weight limit for international travel in the industry let alone $14 a kilo.. #######.

It sucks as the ticket is non refundable or I would change it in a heartbeat.

Fedex quoted $200 for 20 kilo box from cebu to Chicago (2 days via air)

Manila Forwarder quoted $170 for jumbo balikbayan box (24x18x24) no weight limit. Cebu to Chicago (4 to 6 weeks via ship)

So Joy is going crazy trying to limit her stuff.

hmnn....

i'm booked to fly via pal (manila - sanfo).

i was told that we're allowed to check-in 2 bags weighing no more than 32kgs each (at most, 62 inches in dimension), one hand-carried bag (weighing no more than 7 kilos - 45 inches in dimension) and of course your own hand bag.

so that's about 4 bags all in all.

excess baggage is charged $150 (i guess that's per bag).

on a personal note, i was forced to return the bag i bought coz the dimension was 64 inches and the pal staff said, i may be charged 150, even if the weight will be within the maximum weight allowed (32 kgs). the pal staff said it wil all depend on the check in staff, and frankly, i dont want to have to plead anyone on my way out of manila coz i'm pretty sure i'd be harassed that day and i wont have the patience to be extra nice

I also flew via PAL to San Francisco and I had two luggages ( large and medium) weighing no more than 32 kilos each. I had two carry ons. . a shoulder bag ( the size of which was big enough for my brown envelope to be placed inside) and a small box carrying my wedding stuff and xray.

At first I didn't want to leave many things but I also didn't want to pay so I brought my stuff according to their importance and the rest I just left behind because Joe told me I could get them here. I left a lot of "important" things but I had to because I didn't want hassles in the airports because of excess weights etc. . the long flight is already straneous. Because my luggages were not over the allowed weight, my check in was very easy. To add, if the POE is not the final destination , domestic flights here allow only 20kilos per passenger. Since Joe and I had to flew to Florida from San Fran, he brought two bags and I transferred some of my stuff to his bags so I still didn't exceed the 20kilo limit for the domestic flight.

Bottomline is. . . no matter how important the things are that you want to bring, you have to leave things behind for your comfort during the check in process and of course , you will save money. Im sure life goes on when you will be here even if you leave some important stuff in the Philippines :)

So sort out your stuff and bring only the "most" important, unless you want to pay :)

Just a thought.
