I should've taken care of this months ago (you can tell me I'm stupid and I'll agree with you this time) but I never did go to the local SS office and get a new SS card that doesn't have the working restrictions on it. I guess I just never thought it would matter.

Now, my conditional residency expires 06/14/08. I'm not too worried about proving my eligibility to live in the United States while my I-751 application is pending (I just sent it in to USCIS today) because I know that I'll soon be getting a notice from USCIS telling me that my eligibility to live in this country has been extended 1 year.

But I'm wondering now if I should quick try to get a unrestricted SS card before 06/14/08 - for employment reasons? Putting aside the fact that I should've did this a long time ago does it really matter? I do have Tuesday off and I'm thinking of going down to the local SS office and applying for an unrestricted card. What are my chances of getting one with being so close to the big date - 06/14/08?

Any advice would be appreciated.

If it makes you feel any better, I didn't either. ;)

I'd try and get it changed, but be prepared for an employee who doesn't understand and not let you change things so close to the expiration date.

Your GC has to have the expiration date longer than a one month to be able to change your ss card.I tried last month before my GC exp. and they told me that. My exp. was in two weeks and they did not accept. Get your stamp in your PS and if you need to show your eligibility to work.

It's been a while since I got my unrestricted SS Card and believe me that woman at the SS Office was quite insisting on telling me my card was unrestricted! It had the "Authorized to work.." stamp on it too. She even tried to tell me my card has an expiration date on it therefore she couldn't issue a replacement SS card. I asked how do you replace a citizens card, there passport expires their driver license expires? We then hit her with a copy of the following from the SSA website after explaining it to her:

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203410

She promptly left her desk and went, I assume to talk to her boss when she returned she had me complete SS 5 (below) and told me she didn't know if this would work but she would try. When completing SS5 you are completing it for a replacement card.

Please do not listen to a word that comes out of anyone at the SSA Office as they appear to have a thing for not knowing what to do with people with green cards and will spout out all kinds of $hit. Don't accept it, hit them with their own rules, talk to a manager be firm. Take along a fully completed SS5 and a copy of the rules.. demand what is rightfully yours, a fully unrestricted SS Card and accept no $hit!

Good Luck!
