Quick question about Social Security cards.

I'm sitting here wondering if I should apply for a Social Security card....I received my EAD card in the mail shortly before my interview, but am aware if I get my SS card now, it will be stamped with "VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION" and I will have to go back in once I have my green card to order a new card. Given that we only have one vehicle now due to a breakdown, and getting in to the local office before they close is quite tricky as my husband works til 4pm or later, I'm wondering if I'm not better off just waiting on the green card?

It would be nice if getting the replacement card without the "DHS authorization" label on it could be done via mail or something similar, but I suspect this is not the case. It sounds like if I applied now I would have to make at least two trips into the office, which with the current transportation issues is less than ideal.

Any thoughts/advice?

I say apply and worry about getting the conditions removed on the card later. Replacement card applications can be mailed in, but do you really want to put your green card in the mail? I sure wouldn't do it. You can also have someone drop it off at the office for you as long as you have signed the application and provided the required documentation. However, depending on where you live those might not be options. If you live in an area serviced by a Card Center that is where you must apply in person for all applications.

Where should I send my completed Application for a Social Security Card?

NOTE: consider as a mail-in application, an application signed by the number holder but brought into the office by someone else.

A SS card is necessary for working - if you do not want to work then don't worry about it.

This excuse of transportation seems lame to me - you can knock on a neighbors door and get a ride to the SS office (offer to pay and do pay for gas). Good Luck

I Quit,

Thanks for the helpful links. :)

I was really just looking for input on the actual process of the social security card application and condition removal, assuming that certainly some of you here have more experience with it than I do. My apologies if my transportation woes seem silly to you.
