Opening a new Bank account

I am still pending status so took along all my documentation (SSN, passport, Florida ID, Marriage certificate, etc etc.) and a check from the US Treasury and tried to open a bank account.

They got bogged down in the expired visa and refused to open an account, anyone else had this experience?

When I added my husband (UKC) to my existing bank accounts (I'm the USC) there was a MOUNTAIN of paperwork for us to fill out. Since he does not have a Visa, they only needed his passport and UK driver's license for ID, and he just had to sign something saying he was not a USC. We just had a lot of forms to fill in & sign though. (they said it was due to changes in the law since 9/11)

Maybe you should try opening a joint account with your USC spouse first. Once a bank has you in their system then it's really simple to open a 2nd account (I did my money market account online since I already had a checking account) so then you could get your own account.

I was able to open an account while i was here on a visit, the bank was bank one, now chase!!....i didnt have a visa when i opened it or a SSN!!

My only advice is try as many banks as you have patience for... I couldn't get an account either until I had my EAD.

Two forms of ID and a SSN not good enough at that bank. Go to the one across the street. If your USC spouse has an account at the bank that turned you down, take that across the street as well. The bank you've been dealing with has either a rather ####### interpretatation of the US Patriot Act to work with or is "blessed" with grossly incompetent management and staff at the particular branch. My gut tells me it is the latter...

I had no trouble opening an account at Washington Mutual.

I had my SSN, passport, and $200 cash.

I did ask them for their wire tranfer info as I was going to be tranfering HUGE amounts of cash from offshore accounts in the comming months ... LOL. ... received gold mastercard in mail 1 week later.
