If you checked the box on the DS-230, he's supposed to receive it automatically, but a lot of times that doesn't happen (like with us.)

Once your husband arrives and is processed through his POE, it takes about 10 days to a couple of weeks for the info to get transferred into the system at Social Security. So if the card doesn't arrive in the mail within 2 weeks of his arrival, just go on over to your local Social Security office and apply for it there.

It's been a long haul for you, Wahrania -- but your wait is almost over. I can't wait to see your post that he's here !

WOM is right, if you checked the box it may not happen (like with us too.) You can go down and apply at any time, but he may not be int he system yet to where they can start the process-- I'd wait about 10 days or 2 weeks and then go down and do it.

We went a couple days after we arrived to apply for his social security card. Only took about a week for him to receive it in the mail. However his green card took almost 3 months so don't be surprised!! USCIS said that is the norm for green cards to arrive...I was surprised to hear it.

We went to the office a couple of days after he got here and they told us that he had to be in the US for 10 days before he could apply.... so we went a week or so later... after we applied, he got it in about 2 weeks....

He arrived on March 6th and his greencard came about the 24th or so of March.

Hope that helps.

So what if he has the SS card but not the green card yet? Can he still get a job or does he have to physically have both?

He will already have his visa stamped with his registration number and yes you can use this stamp to apply for jobs. He had no problems with the stamp until his green card arrived.

You're doing CR-1/IR-1, right? So the visa they insert in his passport is a work permit as well. You don't need his GC or any stamps or anything like that.

This is a dumb q but is there anything else needed after he gets here aside from his ssn? It seems to good to be true that just get his ssn and wait 2 years for his conditional status to be removed:) It seems like it is too much of a good thing to not worry about immigration related stuff or anything for 2 years, lol

nope, that's it! When you get the conditional GC, you just go get your SSN and then anything else you want to get-- a driver's license, etc. Then you're set until you file for LOC.
