Hillary Clinton today brought up the assassination of Sen. Robert Kennedy while defending her decision to stay in the race against Barack Obama.

...

"We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it," she said, dismissing calls to drop out.

What ,is she planning to have him "whacked" ?

She planning to get him whacked? Nah, it's the other way round.

Not being flippant at all about this, but I think political violence against Obama is a real and serious possibility. Anyone else think so?

Yep. There have been some internet threats on Obama's life made by White Supremists on the internet.

metta, these words by Josh Orton of mydd.com sum it up well:

The United States has a history of profound political violence - and the use of violence to oppress and coerce. And while I'm not quite willing to accept that Clinton spoke maliciously - it doesn't matter. There is no excuse for flippantly referencing assassination, especially given the historic nature of Obama's campaign and our nation's grim history of racial oppression through violence. When Hillary Clinton speaks of our history, she is not reflecting academically or only in a vacuum - her words and influence are real. To act otherwise is negligent, at best.

No context can save her. She must go.

Yes all my gf talk about this. We're different ages, different races, and from different parts of the country and even we talk about this. Clinton referring to it isn't a surprise cuz we're discussing what could happen as well. While it may not be politically tactful she's just speaking what is on ppls minds. Even she, as a women, is under this kind of threat by similar groups. But my parents and their friends all from the baby boomer generation say it, "They will kill him ya know." As if we're supposed to know who they are that will do this. It's just assumed.

I've over heard conversations along this line, "Obama winning would mean that the blacks, who have been repressed since this country was founded, will be on top. A black man will be on top and the blacks in charge and there will be hell to pay in this country for that. Those opposition groups aren't going to let it happen."

I can just hear the riots now if he doesn't get the nomination.

You know I'm not racist in the slightest but this issue is still highly charged in this country from both sides. Even I experience some form of prejudice because my Husband is Egyptian and Muslim. If it's not race it's gender, if it's not gender its religion, and if it's not any of those its class. It is my feeling that our country isn't ready for this. Their campaigns may be too early.

Hillary Clinton was a young woman when RFK was assassinated. Like me, I'm sure she can remember when and where she was when she heard the news. She can probably still see the news reels playing in her head, Kennedy lying on the floor with the back of his head blown off lying in his own blood. How in the name of all that is holy she can make such a disgusting, crude and crass comment is beyond my realm of understanding.

For you to refer to this as a 'witch trial' is ...... well just sick on your part.

agreed. They are taking anything out of context to use it against her. Troll merely posted a soundbite, completely out of context.

I hope she goes until August. Wright is probably frothing at the mouth now, I doubt he could hold it in for 2 more months.

I loved hillary in the beginning, but not anymore, she knows that she is going to lose but the only reasen she is staying is because she wants to keep the dem party from uniting, she wants to say "I told you so". And apparently she wants to wait and see if Obama gets assassinated. She needs to quit now, but she propably wont since even the closest people to the clintons say that they are power loving people, and I believe it. And as far as her recent comment, she is showing her true colors!

See? I told you! Hillary will grasp at any straw and say anything. She may not get the nomination but she will be a thorn in the side of the dems this year.

Kuya Gary! You were right on the money. I just did not fathom that she would take her statements that far. Look out Sen. Obama because there is now a price on your head sponsored by the Clinton Camp. Unbelievable! Just when you think you have seen it all in politics.

Out of context, right

Samantha Powers was right - she really is a monster!

From the NY Daily News - this sums it up quite well :)

Her lame explanation that she brought up the 1968 assassination of Robert Kennedy because his brother Ted's illness was on her mind doesn't cut it. Not even close.

We have seen an X-ray of a very dark soul. One consumed by raw ambition to where the possible assassination of an opponent is something to ponder in a strategic way. Otherwise, why is murder on her mind?

It's like Tanya Harding's kneecapping has come to politics. Only the senator from New York has more lethal fantasies than that nutty skater.

We could have seen it coming, if only we had realized Clinton's thinking could be so cold. She has grown increasingly wild in her imagery lately, invoking everything from slavery to the political killings in Zimbabwe in making her argument for the Florida and Michigan delegations.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.

From Black Star News:

Reacting to Clinton's comments today, New York City Councilmember Charles Barron had this to say: “Hillary Clinton must have lost her mind. For her to even make the implication about an Obama assassination. That is insane for her to say that. There are enough crazy people out there who would want to so something like that…and for her to encourage it? Someone should make a citizen’s arrest of her for conspiracy.

We wholeheartedly agree with Barron's sentiment and we suggest Senator Clinton should be held responsible by all decent Americans if any harm comes to Senator Obama. We believe that if this woman has a shred of dignity and self respect –if not for her, for the sake of her daughter Chelsea—she should apologize to the American people, withdraw from the race and join a monastery.

Man is made by his belief. As he believes, so he is.
