A true leader. How's he fare in the red states?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

Senator Barack Obama
Senate Floor Speech on Public Debt

That comment is retarded however, and if any candidate made such a glib comment they would deserve to lose.

Is that also true of someone who says the US has 57 states?

This election, the question is? Who is the biggest IDIOT!

There's gaffes and gaffes. McCain's gaffe is directly linked to an area of foreign policy he'd be responsible for presiding over as President. To suggest that someone who struggles with understanding the political makeup of Iraq, a country we are heavily invested in is comparable with what could reasonably described as a slip of the tongue is rather silly. I doubt there are many Americans who would be ignorant of the number of states in the country - I tend to think that ignorance over things Middle-Eastern is rather more prevalent.

Ultimately of course - these things are rather silly.

How do you know that wasn't just a slip of the tongue also?

Well obviously I don't - that may well be the case.

But as gaffes go - that one deserves more clarification than the idea that an educated person running for president doesn't know how many states are in the country.

Before you get carried away with your  and your silly mushroom trip fortune cookie metaphors - as I said McCain's gaffe may well have been a slip of the tongue. Its not hard to see the reason here - Where I'm coming from is the idea that a person is rather more likely to be ignorant of the ethnic/political breakdown of a (very) foreign country than they are to not know the number of states in their own.

Do you think that assessment is unreasonable?

I get what you're saying. Honestly, every time I'm trying to figure out which group is more likely to support Hezbollah I have to look it up myself. But how about when Obama proclaimed that ten thousand people died in a Kansas twister that destroyed an entire town when in fact only 12 died?

You can defend this one also by saying sweltering heat or whatever, but honestly imagine if John McCain had made either one of Obama's gaffes I just presented.

Do you think they get dismissed as simple slips of the tongue? Doubt it.

Another silly thread. Honestly, is this ####### just going to continue forever?

Until November at least. After that it will be degrading posts about the winner.

since McCain wont be winning, there wont be TOO much to degrade

On the contrary, he will be the most hated president since Carter. Obama as a president is worse than a joke.

Even if McCain wins in November, he will be like Carter and Poppa bush. He will be a one term pres. If he can make it that long.

I dont anyone that is elected as Pres. in the future can be any worst then the Current one. I think McCain will come close, but no body can beat out bush as the worst pres. in History.

It depends how important you think these things are at the end of the day - anything that ends up offending a particular section of the population or hints at a genuine lack of knowledge about a real policy issue is always going to be taken more seriously than saying something which is just dumb (though in GWB we have the worst of both worlds). Personally I think there's too much emphasis on these kinds of statements and too much knee-jerkery comes out of them - Hillary's RFK reference the other day being a case in point.
