Need Recommendations for Themes!

Today I was accepted on the Borah Foundation Committee! Click here: The Borah Foundation

The committee is made up of 8 faculty and 4 students. The function is to put on an annual symposium of keynote address, or invite a visiting scholar to the University of idaho each academic year. It runs a week long and it's a year commitment for me.

The focus is international in scope and considers the causes of war and the conditions for peace. This is really a great oppurtunity for me and will look awesome to the graduate schools I'm applying for!

I'm open to suggestions if anybody has any on who they might like to hear come speak at an event like this.

The first meeting happened this week and they're asking for recommendations for speakers and what theme we want to present.

This year was: Reconciliation & Peace.

Last year was: Women in War as the Cause for Peace.

I need suggestions or it's my funeral. All I can think right now is about revolution because one of the food science profs sent in this note:

"Hello all, I am in Boise and cannot make the meeting. Since I am a new member on the committee I am not sure how things work. I have spoken to Bill about this but I wanted to tell the committee that I have been in contact with several high-level folks in Nicaragua about getting President Daniel Ortega up here for some kind of campus talk. I know he has been informed of our interest. I will be down there in July. As background, my college roommate and good friend was the nephew of the former dictator Samoza and he is well connected. I would just offer this up a one possible direction. --Greg"

Thx for the suggestion. We have a budget constraint of $45,000 and the key note speaker determines a lot of that. This year we had F.W. de Klerk who served under Nelson Mandela so we've done the South African thing.

I need help with themes surrounding Daniel Ortega if we get him to come speak. He's a former revolutionary leader and current president of Nicaragua. If we get him I need help thinking of themes surrounding this. Otherwise I need suggestions for others and themes. hmmm...

It took me a this long to think up a theme which would fit Mila (of course, the list fits my opinion of her and her husband):

• birth control (Mulroneys added a member during first PM term, 1984-1988)
• loyalty to a nation (referring to 1990 Meech aka "Mooch" Lake Accord)
• keeping your homeland (her original was Yugoslavia)
