I hate to sound stupid but i didn't know about this last year for some reason... my husband today called and told me that next year he'll get a sheep for me and kill it. Kinda freaked me out a little but hay if that makes him happy whom I to say??? But then i came here and found out it's actually Islamic ooops my bad wonder how i missed that???

I'm so excited for this Eid. It's way cooler celebrating with family and other muslims, instead of in the USA where everyone is either clueless or could care less.

That's ok, you're not a Muslima scholar - yet...I learned about it when I was reading about the rituals of the Hajj. I just like to read everything I can get my hands on when it comes to world religions. Inquiring minds want to know.

Despite what some may say elsewhere, jihad is *not* one of the 5 pillars of Islam. Just as a refresher, the 5 pillars are:

*Shahada - declaring there is nothing worthy of worship except God and that Muhammad (saws) is His messenger

*Salat - 5 times daily prayer

*Sawm - fasting

*Zakat - almsgiving

*Hajj - pilgrimage

For anyone looking for an indepth look at the inner aspects of these pillars, I'd recommend Inner Dimensions of Islamic Worship. It's one of my favorite books of all time, something that can be read over and over again as you progress further on your journey.

As I stated recently, jihad is a part of our faith, and we shouldn't be ashamed of it. What we should struggle rigorously against (in fact make jihad) is those who claim to fight in the way of Allah (swt) but ignore the clear rulese He has set, namely, do not target innocent civilians.

heheheh the poop would be a bummer.... thanks for the feedback my learning was in the history of Islam now perhaps i should refocus my studies

I remember Eid in Egypt. On the street where our flat were TONS of sheep everywhere and I had been saying hi to this particular one with a nice pink stripe on it. I didn't ask what the different colored stripes were I just thought it was colorful and cool.

I remember hearing all the "baaaaaaaaaaaaaaa"s going on and could hear it from the flat. Then, one morning I awoke to a plethura of loud gurgling sounds and wasn't sure what was going on since I was half asleep still. My lil pink striped friend was replaced with a street full of blood. Actually all the streets were pretty much full of blood.

Even though I knew what was going to happen on Eid I really wasn't prepared for what I saw. Somehow I thought the sheep were ALWAYS on the street throughout the year and that all the slaughtering for Eid was done at a proper butcher shop far far away.

I'm not sure which one my lil pinky is in this pic but if you can hear me I loved you pinky!!!

Yucky! What a crazy thought to see blood everywhere down the streets!

My experiences with Eid were different. I didn't see any streets with blood anywhere. People in my husband's neighborhood brought the sheep to their roof and did it up there, then instantly washed the blood down the drain with buckets of water. Very clean.
