I don't like "inshallah" being overused or basically used to shirk a responsibility. I do get irritated when I know "inshallah" means probably not. Many MENA ppl know full well that they never intend to do something but they'll say "inshallah" instead of "no". I hate that. So yeah if the husband says "inshallah" I'll be like, yes or no...not "inshallah". So he'll say yes, inshallah...lol.

Do I have to say me too? lol

 Very well said ladies and you are very welcome HLM. Like Kenza said let's find some other Islamic topics to discuss. How about something to do with our spouses? I am always looking for ways for my marriage to grow stronger and my faith to grow. Does anybody have any good Islamic sites to read for inspiration regarding a long lasting marriage?

I always look for how the prophet Mohammed treated his wives and how they treated him. It's very romantic and very inspiring...I can't find links for this now but I will definitly look for them and send them to you. There is soo much to learn from his sirah -his biograghy.

One thing I personally do is ask my husband to pray together if he can't go to the masjid..It makes me feel closer to him and you get this wonderful feeling in your heart of just simple satisfaction I would say.

I love Yusuf Estes! I enjoyed his speech here too in Sac. He is funny :) Hey one question for Adam and other MENA men....do you have a beard? no debate just wondering...My hubby does but it's short...he also inherited the unibrow which he said he'll fix before he gets here lol...

My husband has one short as well...

Thanks girly! Yes, praying together helps us to connect. Although, at times we do our own thing we try and connect like that if we remember. I have my own routine of praying and so does he but if we realize it's time together than we do it together. We always have this little thing after we pray and do our salam alaikum and are finished we turn and give each other a little kiss :luv:

Kenza...as you can see on my display pic..hubster doesn't have a beard. Honestly, his hair on his face doesn't grow thick and a beard wouldn't look bad. I am not into the unibrow thing either.

K...I hear as you like all of the time or as you wish. I really want to say can you make a decision? Sometimes I ask what do you want for dinner and he says as you like. I fix something and then he will not eat it.... That doesn't fly with me!

how bout alhumdulilah???? That one bugs the ####### out of me sometimes because he'll come home and I KNOW he had a sucky day at work and I'll say "how was your day?" and he'll say "alhumdulilah". If I'm in the mood I'll keep asking and he'll keep answering me with alhumdulilah. I never know if it was a good day or bad day for real!!!

Honestly, I dont see THAT many women trying to say Hijab is wrong or bad on here. The few that I can see would be VW, Leyla and myself that seem to agree that it is NOT required. I dont think either of the women OR myself said hijab is wrong. So I really dont know who all the people are that are trying to convince the majority that hijab is bad.

I have never said, nor would never say that hijab is bad or wrong. I have said that headcovering is not required, that the Quran never refers to hijab as a manner of dress, and that the meaning of the word hijab is far broader in that hijab is a means to haya, which is a requirement of Allah. Referring to hijab as headcovering is where it gets confusing for a literal like me. Khimar, a cover, is the proper term for the head cover, not hijab. The terms have been confused in common venacular.

Khimar is the cloth that was worn by both men and women in the ME. It predates the advent of Islam in the area, and was not just used for headcovering against the elements, but also to carry goods. In the Prophet's time, the clothing was very simple. A woman's garment pulled over her head and left a gap that could expose her breasts as she moved about doing her daily chores. Quran 24:31 tells women to cover their bosoms with their khimar, the cloth they often wore as a belt, a headcovering, or to carry items, in order to keep their breasts from exposure. It does not say that the khimar must also cover their heads.

If we are going to be literal about this ayah, then Muslim women are not only required to wear a head covering, but that headcovering must also be used to keep their breasts from exposure. Yet, this is not the case. In fact, it was not until about 250 years after the Prophet's death that scholars decided that khimar would be defined as headcover, changing the meaning that existed during the Prophet's time.

As I sadi before, Muslim slave women were prevented by Caliph Umer, a Companion of the Prophet, from wearing the veil, or from covering between the navel and the knees. Why would a learned Muslim leader continue the pre-Islamic practice of barring the dress of free women from Muslim slave women if it was considered to be a requirement from God?

I'm an Arab Muslim who doesn't wear a headscarf, and a big proponent of not forcing sister converts into wearing headscarves. There is WAAAAY too much emphasis on women as bearers of tradition, and on their modesty and identity as Muslims in Arab culture that has leeched over into Islam. For women, dressing like an Arab to be Muslim has become the norm.

I don't feel shunned, personally, cause I carry some big guns, but some Muslims who believe it's mandatory can be quite ridiculous and rude when they meet Muslimas who dont wear it. And non-Muslims are often very surprised when they encounter a Muslima who doesn't wear it. It's truly unfortunate how hijab has become the overwhelming issue for our community over the last 30 years. It's become an identity shorthand, like wearing a daishiki, sporting a big Afro, and doing the secret handshake was for Blacks in the 1970's. There are so many more important things in learning and growth that should take priority, but it always falls back to hijab.

Huh. You're obviously very conservative, so this interests me.

So you're saying that it does not say in the Qur'an that women must cover their hair? I know that in the old testament, women must cover their heads whilst praying. Why is it that women Muslims often cover their hair, then?

The Quran does not say that women must cover their hair. Not even ayah 24:31 commands it. The explanations refer to ahadith to complete the interpretation, but the Quran is also ahadith, the most authoritative of ahadith. Headcovering predates Islam. It is one of many Arab jahilyya traditions that has become entwined with Islam and exported to other cultures. It is ironic that the Bible specifically commands women to don the headcover, but the Quran does not. Also ironic that the Bible also says that men are the glory and image of God and that women must cover out of respect for that when praying.

Honest to God this question is only out of curiosity- i am by no means ready for any debates- Do muslimas who do not wear hijab; cover their heads when they pray?

Hijab is a means to modesty. I cover my head for prayer. Personally, I cannot wear ritual garments all day, doing the profane in them, then sacredly pray in them, as well.

Oh, another thing I meant to address is the ability to legally forgo a command from Allah if it will prevent one from harm. That is allowed. After 9/11, scholars issued fatwas allowing women to not wear khimar if they believed it would put them in danger. Also, the Quran says we are allowed to lie to keep us from harm, but this allowance is to be used very judiciously.

Noooo...why is he going to get rid of the unibrow? My hubby has one and I love it. :-)

I like the plucked eyebrow look myself. Whenever I see a guy with a uni-brow I think they look like a cartoon bad guy.

But hey, if they keep the uni-brow then they are half-way to the Boris Badenov look come Halloween.

Salaam everyone, I don't think I've posted here before, but I had an amusing trip to the grocery store tonight that made me giggle and I thought I would see if any of you have any similar experiences... I wear hijab, and I am one of only a handful of hijabi women in the city that I live in. Because of that, I get a lot of stares, comments, etc. Most of them are harmless, fortunately... Tonight, though, I was getting into my car and I heard the following interaction from the car next to me:

Little girl: Mommy, why is she wearing that thing on her head?

Mommy: I don't know, baby.

Little girl: Why, mommy? Why is she?

Mommy: Uhh, I guess it's for martial arts or something.

Yeah... I'm a ninja. :D

So, what's the funniest thing you've heard someone say about YOUR hijab? :)
