McCain Rejects Hagee Endorsement

UNION CITY, Calif. — Republican John McCain has rejected the endorsement of an influential Texas televangelist criticized for his anti-Catholic views.

John Hagee, the Texas preacher, withdrew his endorsement at the same time.

McCain issued a statement after audio surfaced in which Hagee said God sent Adolf Hitler to help Jews reach the promised land.

McCain said in a statement: "Obviously, I find these remarks and others deeply offensive and indefensible, and I repudiate them. I did not know of them before Reverend Hagee's endorsement, and I feel I must reject his endorsement as well."

Hagee also issued a statement saying he was tired of baseless attacks and he was removing himself from any active role in the 2008 campaign.

Yes...although he had been made aware of Hagee's other controversial remarks (like about The Catholic Church), but insisted that while he doesn't agree with the Reverend's remarks, he's glad to have his endorsement. That to me says he's trying to garner the evangelical voters, who have already splintered off from the GOP over all the sex scandals.

Yes...although he had been made aware of Hagee's other controversial remarks (like about The Catholic Church), but insisted that while he doesn't agree with the Reverend's remarks, he's glad to have his endorsement. I did know about Hagee's remarks about Catholics and his assanine comments about Palestine a couple of weeks ago (or last week?).

I think maybe McCain realizes he made a HUGE mistake in trying to go after the severe right wingers in this manner.

I think maybe McCain realizes he made a HUGE mistake in trying to go after the severe right wingers in this manner.

I think it was more of a timing issue. He needed to stump out Huck at the time. Now that that's done, he can denounce those that helped him accomplish that task. He's shown his opportunistic trait here. That's all.

Yep. McCain has been pussyfooting around on a lot of issues. He's really in a pickle because while he's tried his darndest to align himself with the Right Wing of the Party, he's jeopardized his possible support among moderates and independents. He wants the cake and to eat it too.

I agree with this. I respect his views on abortion and capital punishment and his stance on the US's "interrogation techniques" but when he starts to flop about it really annoys me
