Religious right feeling left out in race

Christian conservatives who helped elect President Bush are wary of his would-be Republican successor, and now they’re feeling abandoned by Congressional Republicans, too.

There are two sources of their unhappiness: Republicans didn’t rise up en masse last week when the California Supreme Court invalidated a ban on same-sex marriage, and the House GOP’s new family agenda focuses on pocketbook issues rather than moral concerns.

"In 2004, there was great emphasis on marriage, on value voters,” said Tony Perkins, president of the influential Family Research Council. “And now you see [Republicans] running from those values issues. ... By taking a path away from values issues, Republicans will find themselves in the wilderness.”

Congressional Republicans insist they haven’t given up the fight against abortion rights and same-sex marriage. At a session with reporters Wednesday, House Minority Leader John A. Boehner said: “We have never walked away from who we are, ... [but] we don’t control the agenda.

...

The Family Research Council has called on Republicans to reopen debate over the Federal Marriage Amendment in the wake of the California Supreme Court’s decision on same-sex marriage.

...

But congressional Republicans have not yet pushed the Federal Marriage Amendment as part of their 2008 agenda, and GOP reaction to the decision was scattered and muted.

...

Since McCain has locked up the Republican presidential nomination, social conservatives who backed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney or former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee may be feeling like outcasts in this election cycle.

If they’re forced to watch their issues placed on the back burner, the passion they’ve brought to the process in the past could dissolve into apathy this time around.

“The cardinal rule in politics is not to deflate your base,” said Pitts. “Because they won’t vote against you; they just won’t vote.”

So we focus on issues that actually matter to most americans rather than push one groups beliefs on the rest of us? Awwww, how sad.

Hey, i didn't say I didn't believe in some of those issues, just don't think the government should be wasting time and $$$ on gay marriage when we are in Iraq, can't afford healthcare, education is suffering and gas prices are skyrocketing. That's what church is for.
