Hi Jackie,

this is Walt and Rafi. Yeah that is good to read the guides here for help. I think most try to get either marriage licsense or ss# first. Some states require ss# i think?

friends,

After you are approved for Adjustment of Status, which you apply for after you are married, you'll get a 10 green card. You'll also need to get a social security number since it's required for tax filing purposes, to work and to get a driver's license. Two years and 9 months after you become a permanent resident, you can apply for citizenship.

I hope VJ members can help me understand this things...

usually after applying for an AOS, they will grant you a 2 YR of permanent residency or GC... then 3 months before your GC will expire, you'll have to lift the 2 yrs condition and by that they will grant you a 10 YR permanent residency/GC... if married to a USC in 3 yrs (pertaining you're living in the US w/ GC), you can now apply for a citizenship, that could take up to 2 yrs of process... they say, in 3 to 5 yrs of staying in the US (being married to a USC, and w/ a GC), you can already be an american citizen if you will apply for one

for some who didnt apply for AOS right away and they've been here in the US 2 yrs or more, somehow, the gov't will automatically grant them a 10 yr GC, depends on who will grant it of course...

a GC means you're a legal resident in the US, citizenship means, of course you're now an american citizen (more benefits and advantage per se compared to a GC holder)...
