Ok I have a weird question or maybe not! Maybe it has already been asked. We are in the process of our K1 application, just waiting for our interview date. So all our paperwork I am obviously using my maiden name. Once we get married I will be changing my name so how does all that work with applying for AOS and what not. How do you go about changing your name? I know this is probably a silly question but I have no idea how to go about all that. Thanks!

But what about all the stuff that I have here in Canada like my passport and DL and what not?

At some point you're going to get a DL in the US, and depending on where you're going to live, you can use your passport, just remember to always bring your marriage certificate. I'd order a couple of certified copies so that if you lose one, you'll still have another.

Getting a DL, depending on where you live could be a nightmare...fair warning.

You can't get an amended passport anymore either, so you have to wait to renew it with your new name. While travelling (once you have AP or GC in your married name) just remember to bring your marriage certificate just so you can show, if asked, how your name was changed from your maiden name in passport, to your married name in other documentation.

Just wanted to say that in CT they treat your CDN licence as an out of state licence.. so there's no written test or driving test just an eye test (so bring glasses if you need them to drive). Another note, I went on a Saturday to the DMV but they couldn't verify my paperwork with USCIS (or whoever they verifiy your immigration status with) cause it was a non-business day adn they said responses are slow on weekends and evenings, so my recommendation is to do the DMV during daytime hours.. it was a snap here in CT... so no problems!!! Oh and they took my CDN drivers licence.. i never got it back.

Oh thank you so much for the information on the CT DL, I thought I would have to do a test or something. So just an eye test. Now did you have to show that you had valid CT insurance as well? They took your Canadian DL? Are you from Ontario? or another province? I just wondered if it varied from province to province? I was hoping to keep my Ontario DL!

its not really legal to have two different DL's....

in two different names no less. ;)

I had to give up my NS DL when getting my Oklahoma one, the girls in the tag office thought it was awfully pretty.

why is it illegal to have two different DLs? I really don't know why I want to keep my ON DL but I was going to change my name on my ON DL. I guess it doesn't really matter if I don't have it, I guess I just wanted it as a keepsake or something. I'm weird, I know!

really? I don't know why but that doesn't make any sense to me. What about if you have dual citizenship, are you not allowed to have to 2 different passports, lets say a Canadian Passport and an American Passport?
