What should I tell them? I am sure they already know I have a Canadian fiance, so I am thinking it might make sense to say I am going for his visa interview at the US consulate and then vacationing with him on Vancouver Island. Or should I just say meeting up with my fiance and some other friends?

And yes, I'm being overly cautious.

Yes, tell them you're going for the interview and a vacation. I drove across the Ontario border to pick up my husband at the airport in NY, then drove straight to the Quebec border and crossed back with him on the same day so we could attend my interview. It was not a problem for either one of us.

It's funny you posted this question. I was just thinking about this on my way to work this morning...kinda going through the scenario in my head. I am also going to tell them that I'm finally going to the k-1 interview with my fiance in Montreal and will be waiting for the visa to be mailed to him before our return (cuz they always ask how long I plan on staying in Canada).

I bet you're just bursting with excitement...less than a week till your interview!

Sounds like a good answer to me! :)

Four days and four hours until I see him again! But who's counting?

I'm glad I'm not the only one going through the scenario in my mind.

Length of stay is another trick question, because I will be staying in Canada for 8 days, but then I have to cross back just to fly home from Vancouver.

Oh that's right---Montreal mails the visa and you have no idea how long exactly it will take. That is frustrating. I'm so glad Vancouver at least lets us pick it up the next day.

Just tell them you're up there to abduct a Canadian! j/k I'd be truthful. I'd just say you're up for a week for the interview, then coming back in later to fly back.

Don't forget to phone me after your interview! BEST OF LUCK!!!!! I know you're excited...and I'm sure everything is going to go fine. (F)

Everything will be just fine! I was actually on the phone with Andrew when he crossed the border to come for the interview. I heard the border guard ask him what the purpose of the visit was for. He said it was to go to a K1 visa inteview at the US Consulate in Vancouver. The guy was confused. He was like "A what? What type of interview is that for? " When Andrew explained, the guy proceeded to ask how long the whole process took, was flabbergasted that it took longer than a month, congratulated him, and that was that! It'll be super easy!

Congratulations ahead of time! I know you both will do just fine. The interview really was the easiest part for us! Safe travels and enjoy your holiday!

I don't know why you're even concerned, but I guess we all get these crazy moments where our situation makes us almost expect the worst!

Are we talking about Customs on the Canadian side? I fly thru Toronto Pearson monthly, and I always tell them I'm visiting my wife who is going thru US Immigration, and the customs folks are always sympathetic to our situation and excited for our family to be closer together. I've yet to be hassled by the Canadians (USBP takes care of that!). A few have even joked around with me about immigrating to Canada because the weather is warmer (than Alaska).

Good luck!

 My husband used to kid about that all the time. He kept telling me he was fed up with the process and was just going to knock me over the head and tell the border officers that I was bought and paid for and "she's mine so I'm taking her with me".

Heh---I'm a lot smaller than my fiance, so I'm not sure they'd believe me! And yes, I am being overly cautious. We always joked about how much nicer Canadian customs would be than American. On the way north you could admit you were going to Montreal because the drinking age was lower there. On the way back to your own country, you had to be prepared for the third degree.

My fiance, meanwhile, is completely calm. Either that or doing a very good job of hiding it from me.

I haven't seen him in three months. I can't wait (okay, not to make anyone puke or anything....).

Ok, I've told this story here before . . . but it's worth re-telling.

When my then fiance appeared at the Windsor border with the van to come and pick me up and bring the cats and me south, the Canadian border authority asked him the purpose of his trip and how long he would be in Canada. Joe said he was driving to Chatham to pick up his fiancee and then he was taking me back to Georgia where we were going to get married. The Border Guard waved him forward and said 'Drive on, brother, drive on. Far be it from me to stand in the way of another man's misery!" (Hehehehehe- he was laughing too).

You will have no problems at the border - just tell them the truth - they will either commiserate or congratulate.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”
