Hi,

I was wondering if some of you know what is required when getting an insurance for your vehicule in the US:

- Do they need to have access to your insurance record from Canada? (if yes, how can that be obtained in Canada?)

- Do you need to have a SSN to have your vehicle insured?

- Do you need to have a proof of address?

- What is required if I'm only added as a second driver to my gf's insirance policy?

Thank you in advance!

A lot depends on what insurance carrier your fiance has. We shopped around, then just phoned Geico and got set within minutes: they did require our SSNs, but no insurance record from Canada (we told them we were with so and so company). And yup, you need proof of address.

Good luck, L.

How can I get a proof of address though as long as I don't have any bills sent to my attention at my gf's address?

For me, all my husband did was call his insurer (Geico) and add me and my car to his insurance policy. I didn't have a Florida license at the time so they used my Canadian driver's license #. Also, my car was still not registered in Florida at that time, but that was not a problem, either. They just used the Ontario plates. You'll also need your VIN. I didn't need to provide proof of residence, that I recall. But if you do, you can just have someone send you a letter or apply for a store credit card or if you change your address on your Canadian bank or you have a US bank or something where someone sends you mail at your new address you're good to go.
