Given that you are Canadian, I presume you came to the USA via a land POE, so someone entering the US via airplane may not be afforded the same service that you were.

It would be more helpful if you could tell us the specific POE through which you entered in Detroit as that state does have more than one.

As far as I know, JFK is the only airport POE that routinely issues the temp EAD stamp.

Navarre Man - did Tanya ask for the stamp, or was she given the stamp automatically?

She asked for it.

Specifically I wrote a letter for her to present to the immigration officials at ATL and in the letter it asked for her to received work authorization. I was not with her in immigration at ATL.

Calling an illegal alien an "undocumented immigrant" is like calling a drug dealer an "unlicensedregistered pharmacist". (because somebody gives a damn)

Very interesting and good to know! Thanks for giving the extra details that may help others to get the EAD stamp at ATL in the future!

That's strange b/c I know 2 Jamaicans (K1's) that came through ATL that asked for it and were told they do not issue them there...only in JFK! So, I don't know what's up with that...but I would be curious to find out!

Thanks for the info.

Copy of letter I sent to Tanya: I had the phone number to the ATL immigration folks but I cannot locate it right now.

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Tatyana XXX and I am traveling with my son Victor and cat Vassa. We are from Taganrog, Russia and have just arrived from Moscow. My fiancé, Bill XXX will be meeting us at baggage claim for Delta Flight #47.

If you are reading this then 1 of 2 things has happened:

1. I am in immigration and request temporary work permits for Victor and myself, Vassa has had all of her vaccinations and is in excellent health. I have her documents if needed.

2. I need help in finding my way to baggage claim for Delta Flight #47.

If necessary, Bill can be reached on his cell phone (850)XXX-XXXX.

Any assistance you can offer will be greatly appreciated. I extend to you in advance my gratitude for your help.

Sincerely,

Tatyana XXX

JFK is NOT the only POE that issues the temporary 90 day work permit when one enters on a K1, etc.

which other ones do, could be useful.

Detroit.

However, my post wasn't about what other POE's do. It was simply saying that JFK is NOT the only POE that does. There's a difference.

Firstly I find this a rather rude response, and secondly, there is nothing wrong with asking for further information (which you imply you have, but appear reluctant to share) as your short reply suggests.

I would also be intrigued as to know which other POEs give the EAD stamp. It would be nice if you could impart some of your wisdom on us mere mortals. I don't do groveling though, sorry.

I spent about 2 hours searching the forums on this subject over the weekend since I simply cannot come through JFK without turning my journey into a nightmare. My conclusion on the topic is that there is a potential to receive the stamp at ANY POE so you should always ask. Also, it seems to rather depend on the person dealing with you as to whether or not you will be successful in receiving it - if they have the stamp right there to hand then they will likely do it if requested but are unlikely to go looking for it.

When I was researching POE's I saw that the Blaine Peace Arch Crossing has given out the EAD stamp in the past.

We're going thorugh there so we'll ask. It's worth a shot.

When I came thru Vancouver International Airport. They stamped my passport. I had no idea that they had given me authorization to work. Since so many ppl in VJ stated that K-1ers won't get authorization except for JFK Airport, I didn't even look at what they stamped. I only looked at it once we were ready to file for AOS. I was more than peeved knowing that I could have been working all that time if only I had looked and not taken everyone's word on VJ. Oh well, live & learn.

So, lesson learned....

If you're coming on a k-1 visa. Either ask them to stamp it or make sure you look at it after they take it and your information.

JFK is NOT the only POE that issues the temporary 90 day work permit when one enters on a K1, etc.

Really ? I heard that the only other one is LAX.

May 7,2007-USCIS received I-129f
July 24,2007-NOA1 was received
April 21,2008-K-1 visa denied.
June 3,2008-waiver filed at US Consalate in Panama
The interview went well, they told him it will take another 6 months for them to adjudicate the waiver
March 3,2009-US Consulate claims they have no record of our December visit, nor Manuel's interview
March 27,2009-Manuel returned to the consulate for another interrogation(because they forgot about December's interview),and they were really rude !
April 3,2009-US Counsalate asks for more court documents that no longer exist !
June 1,2009-Manuel and I go back to the US consalate AGAIN to give them a letter from the court in Colon along with documents I already gave them last year.I was surprised to see they had two thick files for his case !

June 15,2010-They called Manuel in to take his fingerprints again, still no decision on his case!
June 22,2010-WAIVER APPROVED at 5:00pm
July 19,2010-VISA IN MANUELITO'S HAND at 3:15pm!
July 25,2010-Manuelito arrives at 9:35pm at Logan Intn'l Airport,Boston,MA
August 5,2010-FINALLY MARRIED!!!!!!!!!!!!
August 23,2010-Filed for AOS at the International Institute of RI $1400!
December 23,2010-Work authorization received.
January 12,2011-RFE

Ya'll need to think this through logically. The folks who give this stamp are employees of the USCIS acting as Immigrations Officials at a given POE. Is there any conceivable reason that you can think of that only JFK would issue the temporary work request? Why would our government, as screwed up as it is, favor immigrants arriving through a particular POE over others arriving at various POE's across the country.

The big question here is why would this be the case. I would suggest that someone contact any of our numerous POE's and query them on this issue and report back. As we all know the DHS, USCIS and USDOS have created a bureaucratic nightmare for those of us who choose to do the immigration thing legally. In spite of their efforts to make our lives a living hell, I can think of no reasonable excuse for there to be only one POE in the US that can issue a temporary work permit. Would it be reasonable for the government to expect an immigrant from Eastern Asia to fly non-stop all the way to JFK when their destination is LAX? Of course not. To the contrary my experience tells me something very different.

Tanya entered at ATL and got the stamp. Others have entered at Blaine, WA and got the stamp (not exactly a thriving metropolis of millions of people). I would be willing to bet that thousands have entered at various POE's and received the stamp. It appears that what we are discussing is an urban legand of the Visa Journey. Some good research could go a long way to dispelling this myth. Maybe the K1 flowchart VJ guide could be re-worded to exclude the reference to JFK or more specically include other POE's?

Depending on which U.S. airport you fly into (NY JFK) some will issue a temporary 90 day work authorization if asked for. If issued, the employment authorization ends on the day the K-1 expires. You will have to file for an EAD when (or after) you file for AOS. If you do not receive your EAD before your K-1 expires you must stop working until it is received.

Anyone know of any luck with the EAD stamp at Chicago O'Hare?

If what you are saying is true Navarreman, that JFK is the only POE that does this...one has to wonder if the USCIS is skewed towards a certain group of immigrants. I would say most entering JFK would be from Europe...as opposed to Houston/Atlanta/LAX you are likely looking at the majority coming from non-European countries. I do hope it isn't a case of discrimination, but you never know...
