When flying

I have a couple questions about moving day.

1. I have small kids so we are thinking about just flying down when the K-1 is approved, What can I take with me on the plane in suitecases and what not, ex Toys, clothes etc...I know I can check two bags per person with a ticket is it ok to pack a suitecase of childrens toys ?

2. Fiancee is coming up to visit this summer, Am I able to pack a few boxes of my things and let him take them back down with him when he returns home, making it less for me to worry about packing ?

I am getting rid of most my household things, and storing my momentos at my moms when I can come back at a later date and rent a Uhaul to take them back. But its the other things that I will need like the kids toys and items I am wondering about.

You can pack whatever your little heart desires in your suitcases. With the exception of illegal substances, of course. Just make sure you leave them unlocked so security can go through them.

2. Fiancee is coming up to visit this summer, Am I able to pack a few boxes of my things and let him take them back down with him when he returns home, making it less for me to worry about packing ?

Technically, no, you cannot do this because you need to either accompany the belongings at the POE using your K-1 visa, or provide whoever is moving the items with a form letter and copy of your visa. But that doesn't prevent him from packing a few of your items in his suitcase if you want to get a head start.

Ya, u can bring stuff back in ur suitcases, keep in mind that airlines are paying close to the weights of each suitcase and it costs ya $$$$$ if ya go over.

Yes technically he shouldn't bring anything back to the USA in his car, but if it were I, I would throw in a few items!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

When me and my fiance got engaged I was living with one of my friends in an apartment. After we got engaged I moved back home to save money and my fiance came up and rented a uhaul and took everything that was in my apartment (bed, couches, washer/dryer, tv etc) back to Connecticut with him. He did not get hassled at all at the border and didn't have any problems.

I'm not sure about your fiance driving across with your stuff, but when flying make sure anything that takes batteries, doesn't have batteries in it. I've seen people traveling with kids and when one of their toys went off going through security, they made them take everything out. It dont happen to many people, just depends on the officer. When I moved down here by plane with my 4 year old son, I had 1 suitcase just for his toys. It was a small suitcase, so I used it as a carry-on. Gave him something to do while we waited at the gate to board.

This is why it's so hard to give a definitive answer to anything.

Stacey, I'm not going to bother trying to track down another thread that talked about their boyfriend doing the same thing but getting turned back and having to go and find public storage near the border somewhere so he could go home. It's in the K-1 forum if you want to do a search. Anyway, it'####### and miss. Some people get lucky, some do not.

exactly! the whole immigration thing is hit and miss, lol Just because one person is successful at something, dosnt mean its going to work out for you,lol Thats one of the huge frustrations. prime example is the one VJ member that had sole custody of her children, she had the court order yet she had no written affidavit from her ex, and she was successful, YET another VJ member had the exact same scenario, but was denied, pretty darn frustrating!!

Be carefull with this part as most airlines now only allow 1 checked bag per person. I know as I just flew for my POE and I had to pay extra for my bags. The airlines are doing this to recoup there costs from the fuel prices.

I'm wondering...could you ship stuff down to him now, the things you don't need that is? My now husband did that, just a few things, small boxes of things. The rest his mom shipped down after he got here.

As for bags and such...it's one checked bag and one personal bag, such as a purse or bookbag. We just flew home a couple weeks ago and this was what we encountered with Delta. :) Might be different for another airline.
