Hi all,

I will be having shoulder surgery in a few weeks to repair a small tendon tear. It will be arthroscopic surgery in a day care clinic, so no hospitalization or large incision.....but, I will need to keep my arm completely immobilized in a sling for six weeks. I will then have a rehab/exercise period, but my specialist says there's no reason to expect anything but a full recovery after a few months. I don't have a K3 interview or medical booked yet, but it is very likely to be sometime during the six weeks sling/recovery period.

Does anyone have any experience with something similar during their medical exam? Is this going badly impact my visa medical exam?

HELP!! After six long months of waiting for our I130/I129F approvals, we are now worried about how this could impact the medical for the visa. oh man, oh man..

The medical is more concerned about diseases that you could pass on to others!! I'm only a 2nd yr RN student, but I dont think what you have is contagious, lol I think you will be fine! Couldnt hurt to bring a note from your Dr. explaining the situation and that he expects a full recovery!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Hey there! I was SO nervous about the medical too. I've never been to an easier medical though. Honestly, he tested my reflexes in my legs, checked my eyes, listened to my chest, and talked about how different the process is in Vancouver as compared to Montreal. They took my height and weight as well. The hardest part about the medical was the blood test and the x-ray. You really have nothing to worry about. I know that you're nervous, but really try to calm down. This is the easiest part of the whole process. The ladies at the office told me that, I sure wish I had believed them. It would have saved a whole lot of stress. PM me if you want to. I've got the email address of the lady that does the scheduling for the medical. You can email her and she will put all your fears to rest if that makes you feel better!

I second everything the Ateam said. I had my medical last Wednesday and honestly the toughest part was getting up so early and being there at 6:30! Everything else is really simple. The ladies in the office are very nice and reassuring, they know how stressful this process is for everyone and are very patient. Dr. Morgan is very nice as well.

The only thing you may find difficult is getting your shirt on and off if you can't move your shoulder. One of the ladies there will be able to help you as one of them will be in the exam room with you and the doctor.

Feel free to PM me if you have any other questions.

Emily

Everyone here has given good advice that you need not worry. I just wanted to chime in to say if you have any questions about healing or just want to chat with someone who's been through it, I went through a similar thing with my shoulder a couple years ago. Tore my labrum, had arthroscopic surgery, was in a sling for 6 weeks, had physical therapy, all of that. The toughest part for me was figuring out how to do pretty much everything with just one hand/arm. Changing shirts is definitely difficult but if you have help not so bad. Feel free to PM me as well. :)

Many thanks to you all, for your responses and support!

Barring delaying the surgery, or delaying the interview (and that's NOT going to happen! LOL) I will just have to hope for the best. I'm expecting a full recovery, but at 52 years old, it is possible it could impact my ability to work and/or have a risk of future difficulties...which is a factor that's considered in approving a visa medical exam. We're not completely stressed out about this, but it sure would have been nice for this not to be occurring right at the same time.

Thanks again!

Annie

If that was the case, I wouldn't have passed the medical due to past history of stroke and its after-effects. They only want to do a basic medical, take down your medical history, and make sure you don't have anything communicable that is on the list of no-no's.

Your ability to take care of the financials of the relationship is addressed in the Affidavit of Support, not the medical. :)

I agree with Cassie - if that was the case then I wouldn't have been approved either at 49 years old with Type 1 diabetes. They aren't concerned about your future work ability- your husband signs an Affidavit of Support that guarantees you won't be a financial drain on the US taxpayer. They are only concerned with medical conditions that make you a potential threat to someone else. You'll be fine!
