A 24-year-old Afghan student has been sentenced to death by hanging after being accused of downloading internet reports on women’s rights, the Independent reports.

Pervez Kambaksh is accused of downloading and then distributing reports on women’s rights. The student claims he was tortured until he confessed.

Kambaksh represented himself in the case after fundamentalist groups threatened to kill anyone who dared represent him. He was convicted for blasphemy during a four-minute trial back in January but appealed the charges yesterday.

The prosecution claimed that Mr Kambaksh had disrupted classes at the university by asking questions about women’s rights under Islam. It then claimed he distributed an article on the subject (downloaded from the internet) after writing an additional three paragraphs including the phrase "This is the real face of Islam ... The prophet Mohamad wrote verses of the holy Koran just for his own benefit."

Mr Kambaksh released a statement saying he would never allow himself to write such an article and that the false accusations stem from two professors and student supporters who he claims have “private hostilities against him”.

The head of the panel of three judges, Abdul Salaam Qazizada, adjourned the trial until next Sunday to allow Kambaksh additional time to find a lawyer.

Oh Lawd, here we go again.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

And people, well Obama, want us to believe that we can simply sit down and negotiate with these extremists.

According to the Internal Revenue Service, the 400 richest American households earned a total of $US138 billion, up from $US105 billion a year earlier. That's an average of $US345 million each, on which they paid a tax rate of just 16.6 per cent.

I believe this was after the invasion because it happened recently. Any particular reason why you asked?

Well, then I am officially wowed. Particularly since we have people begging to know that this is a place were we've had such a profound impact based on its harboring of terrorists. And others that imply that only military action works to handle countries such as these...

All cultures are equal. So how does something like this happen?

"The fact that we are here today to debate raising America’s debt limit is a sign of leadership failure. It is a sign that the U.S. Government can’t pay its own bills. It is a sign that we now depend on ongoing financial assistance from foreign countries to finance our Government’s reckless fiscal policies."

I have to agree - lofty speeches and high sounding rhetoric ring pretty hollow when things like this take place.

We might have a government that is complicit to the US, but it sure doesn't sound like a humane one.

Surprised at this? I am not have you seen the punishment in Saudi Arabia? Be-headings, hangings, but that doesn’t stop Bush or his Daddy from being their best buddies. So if Bush can hang out with the Saudi’s, knowing they are violating human rights every day, or do we ignore that because of the big oil money. I mean you don’t see Bush doing anything about Saudi do you? Of course not, so don’t throw Obama in the mix, let the guy get elected. So talk to me about Saudi Arabia, if you need to see some of their weekly punishments, all public so all can see, let me know. The whole thing sickens me, we need to abolish the death penalty period.

The problem isn't the death penalty as such, it is to which offenses it is applied. Whatever your view of the DP may be, in order to be sentenced with it here, you have to have killed someone. And suppose Afghanistan did not have the DP? Then this student would likely be facing life in prison. Either way, it would be a grossly unjust punishment for something that should not incur a penalty at all.

And people, well Obama, want us to believe that we can simply sit down and negotiate with these extremists.

Evil is pretty wide-spread, too...someplaces, though, have officially sanctioned it.
