Hi,

Apologies as I think this is posted to the wrong forum but I wasn't sure where to post, as I haven't been on VJ in a minute!

Anyway, I am off to apply for my Scoial Security # tomorrow morning, and was told to bring " everything thhey gave you at immigration". I cannot find anything they gave me, and don't remember being given anything, just surrendering my brown envelope, in fact all have is my x-ray from the medical, and of course the stamps in my passport, including my EAD. I was hoping somebody who came in on a K1 could tell me what you needed to present at the SS office, as I am having a minor panic here!!

Thanks, and again sorry if this is the wrong forum,

Lily

did they make a copy of your birth certificate and return the original to you right away? i'm assuming that making copies of original documents is always the case but don't want to assume. thanks!

If the SSA office needs to retain any document for verification or translation it will be photocopied and the original given back.

The birth certificate is the document that should be provided for proof of age, but a lot of offices take either the passport or birth certificate.

RM 00203.110 Evidence of Age for an SSN Card

https://secure.ssa.gov/apps10/poms.nsf/lnx/0100203110

If a foreign-born person has the foreign birth certificate (BC) in his/her possession or can readily obtain (i.e., within 10 business days) a properly certified copy, ask him/her to submit it.

3. Level Three - Alternative Evidence of Age

-- Foreign passport

It's important to make sure the date of birth is correct, as SSA no longer requires proof of age for U.S. citizens age 60 or older applying for benefits unless there is material difference in the date of birth provided and the date of birth on the SSN record.

So if you become a U.S. citizen and file for Social Security benefit, you won't need to provide proof of your age if you are 60 or older when you apply.

True... they only accept original requirements but they will return it to you after photocopying it. I remember going there with just a photocopy of our marriage license (without the original) and the SSA officer told me to go back and bring the original. Pain in the neck...

I did that when I had my card changed into my married name.
