transporting a dog via air or something

I was planning on having my husband come down to the U.S. in July when the kid moves down. Problem is, we have 1 dog that still needs to make the trip. Canada Air will transport, but only if the temp is between 45F and 85F for both departure and arrival airports. I live in Phoenix and it really only gets to be that cool here in October and last through possibly March. Obviously transporting during the winter is also not an option because Toronto would be below the minimum. Seems we have a very small window to work with.

I am really trying to avoid making a trip via car because that involves me flying to Buffalo, renting a vehicle, driving to TO, picking everyone up, crossing our fingers that husband will be allowed into the U.S., and driving that long horrible drive to Phoenix. Anyone have any knowledge/experience of services that can be used to transport a dog?

Someone has probably dealt with this and has a better answer, but if all else fails, could you fly the puppy someplace cooler but near, such as Flagstaff or Albuquerque, and drive him from there?

how big is your dog? we travel back and forth between Canada and U.S with our dog...but he's only 7 lbs and fits in a Sherpa carrier that goes under the seat infront of us....

If your dog is bigger and can only go in cargo then your options are limited....have you tried looking at other U.S carriers?

Just for an update:

Husband is flying in Saturday with the dog to LAX. The dog is ~65 lbs so must fly in cargo on the plane. The airlines (Air Canada in this case) requires a TSA approved kennel for the dog, which my husband could only find available for sale from the airline itself (go figure...) at a cost of $250. The kennel as those ring thingys so it can be strapped down in the cargo hold. The shipping cost for the dog is $200. My husband has to go to the cargo terminal to drop off the dog at least 2 hours pre-flight and present the papers for the dog (vaccinations, certificate of good health) and at that time, the airline will check the weather forecast for the destination, and if it is between their range of 45F - 85F, the dog is processed as cargo. Today, the high temp in LA on Saturday is predicted to be 81F.

My husband will fly on the same flight, so after dog is squared away, he has to go to the passenger terminals and go through normal check in (pray that U.S. immigration is good to him one more time!). I drive from Phoenix to LA (5-6 hours) and pick them both up (and different terminals, of course). We turn around and head back to Phoenix same day since we are moving from a 1 bed apartment to a 2 bedroom on Sunday, the following day and only have the moving van rented from 8am - 6 pm that day. I get to go to work on Monday and relax.

2 things could go seriously wrong with our plans: 1) the temperature is predicted to go 4+ degrees higher and 2) U.S. immigration denies my husband entry.

We'll keep our fingers crossed that everything goes perfectly smoothly, that the temperature is within reason, that the dog has a good flight, that your husband has a quick and trouble-free passage through immigration, and an uneventful flight. Good luck with the move.

Sorry, just saw the thread and it's kind of too late now, but just wanted to add my 2 cents:

United transports checked in animals (AVIH- animal in hold) throughout the year. There's usually just an exception of "short nosed dogs" during summer time because of health related reasons. Other than that no restrictions. You can use your own kennel as long as it is TSA approved. The charge for a large kennel is $250,00.

Do tell us how it goes. I took my dog in the car last weekend from Jersey to Ontari-ari-ari-o and she did quite good during the 9 hour drive. I was surprised. She did throw up once though. haha
