When I was studying in France, I was explained the way they prepared the duck and it is disgusting. They feed the duck with extra greassy food until its liver fails. After it has had a painful death, they use its liver to prepare foie gras. It is inhumane first of all; second, its taste is disgusting and worst of all, it is unhealthy as hell. Don't understand how people can eat that kind of food...

exactly why i don't think highly of it, and they are force fed.

yep, the practice is just disgusting.

The thing that kills me is that people actually spent serious effort to get it overturned. I mean #######, don't chefs have plenty other tasty items (including the veggie version) to put on menus. Can't they think of anything else to draw in patrons? Chopf#cks!

my husband went craaazy over foie gras when i made it for him a few months ago. foie gras tastes better than it sounds. but the way they treat the poor ducks and geese is really disgusting.

but hey, if you eat chickens, cows, etc they aren't generally treated THAT much better anyway!

true...

BTW... there is a vegetarian version that actually tastes much, much, much better.

For the veg version, do they force-feed ducks until their brains fail and they turn into vegetables? :P

Actually... I made one at home... almonds, mushrooms, onions, and butter... pretty tasty.

Yeah, I know it actually has little to do with the food itself....but dang, it's a strange political pawn.

Well you know someone burnt to a crisp the other day His Majesty's Michigan Lake House in New Buffalo. Unfortunately I see a couple of tax-favorable bans (licor licenses increasing, etc) being laxed...

Well Frances, I see the "big picture" view of Chicago's ban on foie gras as akin to the hypothetical case of Calgary banning filet mignon (expensive cut of beef).

(hypothetical as the comparison blows up when economic analysis is done; a good portion of Calgary's economy is reliant on meat processing).

Oh, thank God.....now I can visit Chicago again!

Life's just a crazy ride on a run away train

You can't go back for what you've missed

So make it count, hold on tight find a way to make it right

You only get one trip

So make it good, make it last 'cause it all flies by so fast

You only get one trip

no.. the mexican coca cola is still made with real sugar cane sugar.. not corn syrup.. and the ban was made because everybody (not only latinos) was buying more mex coke than the american one, so they went and whined and banned every coca cola import product (even the apple soda manzana lift, which is not made in USA) claiming Atlanta was the big cat of the southeast and they were messing with their sales, sniffles... now it's back to normal

cooking with mex coke pwns too

ask anyone whos drank mexican coca cola, they'll tell u it tastes better

It sounds disgusting. Seriously.

Diana

Actually it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be :P

There's this place up on the N. Side that serves it ala Hot Dog... not quite sure I'm willing to go that far with it beyond a taste... but I know people that swear by it.

We all know what goes in hot dogs...
