A federal grand jury on Thursday indicted a Missouri woman for her alleged role in perpetrating a MySpace online hoax on a 13-year-old neighbor girl who committed suicide.

Lori Drew of suburban St. Louis was charged with one count of conspiracy and three counts of accessing protected computers without authorization to obtain information to inflict emotional distress on the girl.

Drew allegedly helped create a false-identity MySpace account to contact Megan Meier, who thought she was chatting with a 16-year-old boy named "Josh Evans."

Megan hanged herself at home in October 2006 after receiving cruel messages, including one stating the world would be better off without her.

...

The conspiracy count carries a maximum penalty of five years in federal prison. Each count of accessing protected computers carries a maximum possible penalty of five years in prison.

Half of me wants to blame the "MySpace culture" and how crazy it's all become. However, the other half realizes that someone who is well-adjusted wouldn't kill themselves over a few nasty messages received online. While I have no idea if she had a psychological disorder, I can't help but feel she had problems beyond a "MySpace addiction."

That is so sad, remember the girl was 13, just a bag full of hormones, bad enough when you have a decent life, but throw in some insane sick woman, now you have a situation. I remember I was brain dead at 13, and it would not take a lot to do something stupid, but I didn’t have the internet either. Not sure what the older woman’s angle is, a joke, I think she better try again. Why would an adult play a game with a 13 year old girl, which is not her daughter. She got a light slap, but if she would have had maybe a bag of pot, than and only than can we give some good down time. Violence doesn't get the max sentence these days, prision is too crowded with non-violent offenders, so we let the violent ones out early.

A woman is like a tea bag- you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.

G-girl, that about sums up how I feel about that whole mess. It certainly makes you wonder.

Don't just open your mouth and prove yourself a fool....put it in writing.

It gets harder the more you know. Because the more you find out, the uglier everything seems.

I remember reading the story a while ago. Sad, I'm glad the mother was charged.
